Ground Dumped - Bombs

Right, I see your railway wagons and old planes and raise:
Bombs.
I heard a story that at the end of WW2 this area was used as a
huge ammo dump, with stuff just stacked along the roadside and
originally discounted it as daft. Then I noticed that there are
lots and lots of flat areas dug into the road verges, which tie
up with the stories of corrugated iron huts full off ammo.... At
a loose end yesterday I did a bit of google and find... 176,000
tons of assorted ammo, including chemical weapons, all stored in
very basic conditions over an area of 220 square miles...guarded
by 6 military police. I find that the destruction of chemical
weapons by burning took place about 150 metres from what is now
a friends house. I am a tad stunned...

yes - you are right about that :thumbs:
know a little bit about that too :-?
cumbria was/still is used to store this stuff :rolleye0012:
norfolk area was also used to dispose/burn chemical ordnance
old/disused mines were also used for storage/disposal - so there
are sites all round the country :-?
a lot was dumped out at sea off scotland in the irish sea - it
gets washed up some times in dumfries and galloway and silloth
areas
will be getting some pics of that area on my hols/mini mcleafers
in august - it is full of war department buildings in random
places that have no clear purpose :popcorn:

A lot got dumped in the Hurd deep & other places around Alderney
- they're shown on the old Admiralty maps. "Low level"
radioactive waste was also dumped there...

driving around the roads on the suffolk/norfolk border around
the town of Bungay where i,m from you can see concrete pads in
what look like field entrances they are the loading bays for the
bomb storage sites.
