Hello Richard
Have done most of that and the AA man tested for voltage and
earthing. Think its a case of a new one or refurb one. Will give
it one last clean out and see what happens.

Will give it another clean out tonight weather permitting and
see were it goes from there. May be having to get another one.

Hello All
No luck with this starter. Took it off gave it the best clean i
could. Used some emery cloth to clean the contacts. Wiped it all
over with paper towel. And it still refused to budge when
tested. When it did it smoked and sparked up. Looks like its off
to the auto electrics to see if they can refurb it. And maybe
the search for another.

Where was the smoke from? The contacts or the windings? If the
windings, they'll probably need to re-wind it which may not be
cheap. Here's hoping it's just the contacts and commutator!

shape.

Hi All
Took the starter motor to the auto electricians. He took one
look and said its a botched job make up and was never going to
work. The end casing didnt match up to the body. It was
supposedly a new britpart one six months ago. Makes me wonder.
Anyhow he said he can get it going again new contacts springs
clean etc.

I had no end of problems with the starter on my 2.25
:smiley-furious:
After having the bastard thing off MANY MANY TIMES to try and
clean up the bendix, connections etc, I finally relented and
bought a replacement starter motor.
My replacement was a Shitpart one from Craddock's at £100.
Had an odd problem out of the box, whereby it worked perfectly
for 6 times, and then the solenoid just clicked away to itself
:banghead
Took the starter off, seemed to work fine on the bench :-?
Couldn't really see anything wrong, although one of the field
coil connection seemed a little loose, so tightened that up,
re-installed it and so far no problems.
If I hadn't got a 2.5 petrol I'm planning on installing soon,
I'd have plumped for a modern, pre engaged reduction starter.
Seeing how the 2.25 that's in is a bit of a 'stop-gap' engine, I
didn't want to spend too much money on it.

Fit one of those Powerlite pre-engaged starters with the piggy
bike solenoid on them. Much smaller than the standard LR starter
motor but lower current and higher torque. Model specifically
designed to fit Series Land Rover. They really kick your engine
over double quick time compared with a Lucas Prince of Darkness
starter. Although you can get one online over here quite easily
I think they are Canadian. You can either use your existing
cabling to the starter of bypass the starter solenoid as it has
its own. Downside is I think they are about 160 quid though but
they are strong little bastards.

Starter refurbed for the cost of 20pounds. Got to get home now
and get it fitted. Lets hope the weather holds.

Hello All
Well got the starter home tested it and it spun like crazy. So
fitted it to Misty in record time. Like to thank the person who
posted about using as many extensions on your socket to give
better access to the top bolt. At the mechanics now for mot test
time.
