Starter motor

Hello All
Thanks for previous advice. Mistys starter motor decided to play
up today. Started at half five this morning okish, finished work
and had to hand crank her. Just clicking at solenoid nothing
else no turn spin etc not even with me hitting it with my
stick.. Got to school and come to start her nothing not even
able to crank. Got the AA out he tested all cables battery etc,
even whilst i was turning ignition. Concludion that starter was
playing up he tapped it whilst i turned ke. She roared into life
no problem idled ok on petrol and also gas. Whats the best
solution here ? New starter motor? Take off give it a spray? ll
help suggestions welcome

I guess that depends on your budget. Personally it's my largest
irritation with a vehicle, unreliable starting. You could try
pulling the starter, giving it a good clean and fitting new
brushes to see if that helps. That would be the cheapest option.

When the starter on the ambulance started misbehaving it was a
bit of a no-brainer, being stuck 100 miles from anywhere in the
US with no mobile phone service did sway my decision somewhat
but with the usual suspects wanting 3 figures for a recon it
seemed a more sensible bet.

200tdi starter motor is what I have fitted to the 2.25d and has
been for a long while now.
It was one of the first pieces of advice I got when I started to
'recommision' the NIAB and damn good advice at that!

Hello All
Quick update on Mistys starter motor. Managed to get it off the
vehicle that top nut is a pain to get to. Pulled it apart gave
the brushes a clean with emery cloth and were they contact. A
good spray with 3 in 1 oil. Then tested it out with jump cables,
it spun really fast. So put it back in, connected everything
back up and it kicked in. Tried it several times let her warm up
and tried cooled down and tried. Kicked in every time. Result i
say at the moment touch wood.

Hi Folks
Been out and tried another three times and all seems well. It
kicks in really quick hardly seems to turn and the engine is
coming to life. Question is though is this a good thing or not?

Hi All
Decided not to play today. It tried to kick in and turn the
engine. Not quite getting there then just a click and nothing.
Got the mot at the end of week too.

Hi! Sorry to hear of your tribulations.
Did you put 3 in 1 on the brushes? If you did, that could be
part of the problem and you'll need to re-clean the brushes
(isopropyl alcohol should work if they're not too badly oiled).
Did you also clean the carbon deposits out of the gaps between
the copper plates the brushes contact on?
You note that your battery is good so I'm struggling to think of
anything else - unless your battery has discharged itself?

You may have done this stuff already but:
Test battery with heavy discharge meter
Clean battery terminals to bright metal
Clean battery clamps likewise (internal clamping surfaces)
Examine battery cables for continuity
Remake earth to body and chassis
Ensure solenoid ram free to do it's stuff
Remake cable connections to solenoid
Remake cable connection to starter
Clean out between the segments on the commutator end of armature
(as advised above)
Clean surface of commutator segments to bright copper-use non
conductive cleaner/abrasive
Measure brushes to ensure they are still long enough!
Hitting the starter motor in these circs does-possibly-two
things: frees the brushes to make enough contact, restores the
earth between the body of the starter and the engine
