Well resurected:
The Mon and Brec, a lovely canal skirting round the valley
sides, found itself a bit empty a couple of years back:

a big un ! From what it turned out had caused it, it could have
happened any time since the day it was commisioned, it just
happened to wait until the old barns below it had been converted
into houses and an arbortem had been planted.
Its not very often you get to walk across the bed of a canal -
and stay dry.

IIRC, there where several sites in that area that were at risk,
so remedial works were undertaken at the same time as the repair
to this breach; the total came to approx 7m and was the real
reason why BW pulled out of the Cotswold Canal restoration job.

'Five Rise' at Bingley is being renovated at the moment, with
new lock-gates being fitted (made just down the road from me)
It's drained, & open for inspection at the end of the month
Sat28th/Sun 29th

Aye I was thinking of popping over and getting some pictures - I
saw it mentioned on Look North. There is also a firm in Sowerby
Bridge who make lock gates too!

When I have to make the trip to head office in London I make a
point of walking from King's Cross along the Regent's Canal.
Amazing how quiet it is when it runs through Camden Town et all.

Popped over to Bingley today to see the 5 rise locks as they are
currently undergoing repair. Nearby are the Bingley 3 rise locks
too!

John, the basin in-which your boat is moored looks astonishingly
unpolluted. How many thousand litres of slick-breaking
emulsifier do British Waterways use on a daily basis?

A few years ago while in southern Ireland we went to Cong "the
home of the Quite Man". The canal there is a dry one.It wad dug
during the potato famine to keep the locals busy.Thing is they
dug it in lime stone and when it was fill the water just drained
away.
