Landrover shaped hole on my driveway :-(

Bloody thing...
Started on the button yesterday, and tore up to the stables like
a thing possessed - running lovely.
Spent an hour messing around with the nag, got in, turned the
key, and heard the fuel pump kick in, then pressed the start
button, and it turned over but wouldn't fire. It's currently
wearing a weedy little 063 battery, which lasted all of 20
seconds before chucking the towel in. One very dead car. Fuel
pump still engaging when I turned the key, but only a clunk when
I pressed the start button.
Just about to whip the battery off and charge it, to see if
yesterday was just a blip, but I suspect I've broken it...
Very very very cross...

2.25 petrol
I can't get the sodding battery leads off - not only are they
welded on with years worth of crud, but I can't go at them with
any enthusiasm, because of the wiring for the start button,
which is getting right in the way, and making fireworks happen.
I've cracked the back of my head on the bonnet twice now and Im
EVEN crosser than I already was!

And having failed to get the battery disconnected (I had to
dress up as a girl and go to a meeting) I thought I'd try and
turn him on, just in case it was a random outburst and all was
miraculously fine. Fuel pup still engages, but theres just a
clunk when I press start button - and the green oil pressure
light comes on...

Hello Ally
For what its worth when i had problems with Misty not starting i
just checked power from battery to every connection and through
the ignition switch. Even took jump cables straight to starter
bypassing the starter solenoid. Mine was more electrical
problems than fuel pump but maybe worth a check.

Dare I suggest the starting handle? Can be a bastard to start
still at times, but always useful to have (and useful to
practice if nothing else!)

It does sound electrical. Possibly the solenoid not engaging or
the starter not spinning. Try tapping the starter with a hammer.

That might have something to do with it, firstly crappy old
battery cables do nothing for your starting prowess and secondly
a Series 3 shouldn't have a starter button (or an electric pump
on a 2.25), so it sounds as though you also have non standard
wiring.
I'm mentally busy at the moment, but I'm just along the M4 and
may have some free time next week if you need a hand.

Ouch. Will refrain from posting an inappropriate joke in
sympathy as Smokie decided to do a similar thing in winter... A
new heavy duty battery solved the issues (I think it's a Yuasa
marine battery and was basically the biggest (in terms of
cranking amps and amp hours) I could fit!!).
As suggested, it sounds as if either your battery is dying or
the starter/starter solenoid is giving up (for the solenoid, tap
it with hammer or largish spanner as suggested but not too hard
as you don't want to crack the housing!). It may be worth
checking your battery with a battery tester, if you can get hold
of one (a multimeter across the terminals will give you an idea
as you attempt to start it but is no substitute for a proper
battery tester).
Can you get a ring spanner on to the terminal clamps? If so,
I'd suggest wrapping the rest of the spanner with insulating
tape (for peace of mind!) and seeing if you can free the clamps
off .
If the bolts on the clamps are seized, clean them up a bit with
a small wire brush (I use a diddy brass wire brush, not much
bigger than a tooth brush) and hit them with some penetrating
oil morning and night (and maybe for another morning and night)
before giving it another go. If your battery leads are long
enough, it may be worth cutting the clamps off & replacing with
new (or just replacing the battery cables in their entirety).

Hi All - thanks for the advice/support/lack of 'bloody women'
jokes!
Someone has obviously had a load of fun playing around with this
vehicle - starter button et al - nowt like an enthusiast to cock
something up very satisfactorily. I cant grumble as I carried
out a few 'subtle' modifications to my MGF -and are probably the
reason why it expired in a puff of green smoke on the A40 last
year.
The battery is tiny - and I knew it needed replacing. I'm going
to get tit out tomorrow by hook or by crook - had the genius (I
think!) idea of wrapping the spanner in insulating tape to break
the fireworks display/head cracking/cursing cycle.
Starting handle is in the back. I did look at it today...
I was very adept at the solenoid tapping trick with my last one
- that was its only quirk. I even checked with the ex-husband,
who confirmed that it didn't wander at all until you got to
55mph, which explains why this one shocked me a bit.
Doug, it'd be fab to have someone who knows the breed to come
and have a look at some point. No pressure though, as I will get
a mechanic out this week to sort the current issue (if a new
battery doesn't do it)
