steam up in Uffculme

So it was a pretty day yesterday and my mate calls to say do I
fancy an afternoon looking at old machinery. As it was only up
the road I thought I would give it a go. We went to the wool
mill at Uffculme as every bank holiday the fire up the steam
part of the wool mill and run demonstrations as its run by
volunteers. Some chap does the tour, giving talks on what the
various machines do and the history behind the mill and when hes
not talking he plays the clarinet which I found a little odd,
but each to our own. Anyhoo, I took some pictures....

This was the wheel house for the water wheel. It was about 20
odd feet in diameter. The shaft went though the wall and was
then geared and split to run all the various machines.

Each of the machines had a description board about it.

The original clocking on clock, also still in working order. It
ahd a pendulum tickinig away in the back.

one of the two boilers that run the steam side of things. There
was a old bearded chap with shovel size hands feeding it.

The wheel on the left had woolen rope running up into the
ceiling again driving the shafts to turn the machines. There was
one engineer that maintained the whole factory.

This badboy was built in 1867. The flywheel on the left was
again about 20 feet in diameter. It was also about an inch out
of true at its extremity. It puzzled me as to how it didn't wear
bearings etc out.

And just as we were leaving, this little chap came into the car
park. The chap driving it said it was an original ford pop with
an orignal kit car body from that era that ford did as a
project. It had a lateral leaf spring at the rear.
All in all not a bad afternoon.
