101 v8 to 200tdi conversion. How much?

Just mulling it over. I hate petrols with their crazy whizzing
and sparking bits although I enjoy the novelty of running a v8
but not the 14mpg. I shudder to think of the fuel lines in a 101
running over electrical cables as well.
How much do you think it would cost to convert a 101 v8 to a
diesel tdi.
I know a lot of chaps wouldn't entertain paying someone to do a
job like this but I'm just mulling over and I don't really have
the time. I hear £1000 might be a starting bid.
My 101 is LPG at the moment but to be honest I don't like LPG
much either. It's more expensive now which makes the running of
it less beneficial as it runs at quite a bit less MPG.
Any one here pay for a conversion.

I've heard of people putting the 2.8 300tdi in and also the
ishitzu 2.8 (if you put that one in prepare for a cyber bumming
;D)
Have a think how much it costs you per mile to run rather than
the MPG. I really don't think you would get the 'book' MPG for
a 300tdi of any flavour due to the aero dynamics of the 101.

Your LPG should only be 2-3 mpg less than petrol. So tbh its not
going to be much cheaper to have diesel.
Spend the money sorting the V8 out, apart from changing the oil
every 5000 the ignition bits get done every 2 years and thats
all she ever needs.

If you do go down the route of having a diseasel right under
your elbow, you might want to invest in some ear defenders...

When I owned Bruno I mulled over the idea of a diesel
conversion. After much consideration I came to the conclusion
that the engine of choice would be the Cummins 4BT 3.9 litre 4
cylinder. I'm no great fan of the 6BT but the 4BT I'm impressed
with, we've got 4 buses so fitted at work and one is coming up
to 500,000 miles on the original lump. Our Plaxton Primos manage
13.9mpg with an auto box, horrendously inefficient angle drive
and an unladen weight of nearly 6 tonnes so I figured a 101 so
fitted would be pretty economical. The 4BT red lines at 2600 rpm
so crownwheel+pinions from a stage one V8 would be in order as a
minimum, and perhaps a higher ratio transfer gear too (there are
loads to choose from for the LT95). The V8 is 144kg, 300Tdi
205kg and 4BT 338kg so there is a rather obvious weight penalty
to consider but it seemed like a good idea to me anyway. It's
all academic now as I sold Bruno but I'd still favour the 4BT
over a smaller displacement lump if I were to diesel a 101.

I think that the tdi will be too underpowered and it will have
to work hard. I would consider a perkins 3.9 phazer but as said
before its not gonna be in a any way quiet!! ;D

I'd say a tdi would go well in a 101...
101's really ain't heavy, only about 100kg's in it between a 101
and a 109, similar book bhp and the tdi has more torque.
I'd do it ;D

Thinking about it all I would say if you really really want to
make it worth while at least stick something half decent in
there. Personally I don't really like 4 pot diesels as a general
rule, a Merc OM 617 or the old 5 pot audi/volvo lumps would be a
good all mechanical type of engine which will at least make it
driveable. If you are not mega daunted by leccy stuff a td5 or
2.5td out a P38 would be pukka.

The 5 pot diesel in our Merc Sprinter van is quite pokey, I
could see that being nice in a 101. Td5s aren't my cup of tea, I
can't say the Td5 boingy I had was much different to my mates
300Tdi to be honest, other than it stalled all the time. The P38
lump being a BMW car engine wouldn't be as good as a Tdi IMHO
due to it being designed more for power up the top end rather
than low down grunt. I've driven the same engine in a 3 series
and it wasn't particularly impressive in that to be honest.

I presume a GMC/humvee lump is too big to fit? Thats the
definition of a grunty but simple diseasel
