Land Rover Steering Death Wobble

Had this for a while now, basically sometimes when I hit a bump
while driving the steering starts to oscillate from side to
side, sometime its not too bad, other times I have to slow down
or drive through it. When it is doing this the front wheels
shimmy from side to side with the steering wheel, like a fast
pendulum effect. It started to get much worse recently and I
need to get it sorted. So far we (when I say we I mean Andy
Landy) have tried taking shims out (worked for a short while),
rebuilding swivels and rebuilding the relay :-?. I have tried a
few times to take some of the play out of the steering box with
the nut on the side, but this last time has just made the
steering stiffer ( I over did it a bit), it still has a dead
spot in the middle and the shimmy is still there. The Bus has
been running One Ton rims for the last 6 or 7 years and 750 SATs
for at least 20 years, the box can never hold on to its oil for
long either so maybe it is time for a steering box change? Not
quite sure what state the bushes are in if they may have a part
to play? *help*

check u bolts,
check the arms on the top and bottom of the relay and the
steering box aint loose or tightened on the top of a spline and
not in the root where it grips
check balljoints
check wheelbearings aint slapping,
check swivels again,
check steering arms on swivels, the 4 bolts on mine used to work
loose, and produce the same effect

Adam R beat me too it with his first suggestion.
It sounds to me like your axle is shifting on the springs a bit.
Could be track-rod ends, but I'd fancy they would reveal an
error when doing speed and a turn, rather than when you hit a
bump.

I had this once - hit a bump when cornering and the steering
would start to shimmy wildly :o
Mine turned out to be a swivel.
Check your swivels again (jack up, brakes on and try to rock at
12 & 6 o'clock) :thumbs:

Steve, check your steering relay again.I had exactly the same
problem years ago when I first ran on 900's. The relay also acts
as a steering damper and if it's low on oil or is just plain
knackered, you will get the symptoms that you describe. Good
luck, I know from experience just how scary it can be!

When very young (just a few years ago!) I had a Ford Prefect
with a very worn TRE. It behaved in precisely the way described
here-I've since always gone to them first when encountering this
type of thing.

The ambulance did this, I booked it into Dunsfold for them to
sort it and a number of other little jobs - turned out the
swivel preload was the cause. They set it, touch wood 6 years
later it's still fine.

TRE, thats the phrase I was after not balljoints :banghead
Also, check front prop, mine used to flap about at about 65-75
and cause the front axle to oscillate.
