Underground Matlockshire 28-04-13.

Last Sunday, a few of the OLLR minex group met in Derbyshire,
for some underground shenanigans.
First stop was high above Matlock, - there are some nice farmers
in the Peaks, the guy at Ember Farm let our three Land Rovers
park on his field (cheers!) while we went for a mooch further
down the gorge, in Devonshire mine/cavern.
A former lead mine, this bugger was bloody hard work, with lots
of crawls & stoops. (Some of us are still suffering. :eek:)

This natural stone monolith was around 15' tall, and was
emitting a hum as we held our ears to it. :eek:

On our way out, we took the wrong turn at a fork in the
workings, & ended up lower down the hillside than we wanted, so
more climbing was needed to get us back up to the entrance.
After a well earned lunch break, we then drove down to the Via
Gellia valley, in search of Groaning Tor, more climbing to get
to the adit, but a nice easy walk in mine. (once we'd crawled
over a collapse just inside the entrance.)

After another short drive, it was time to check out an adit by
the side of the road.

An extremely wet mine, with three seperate areas of water
pouring from the walls, the miners gave this one up a short way
in. - still a good little mooch though, and the ice cold water
tasted lovely.

As we left the mine, the others though it was time to head for
home, and after some tearful goodbyes, myself and GrayS2A drove
a little further on to check out Merry Tom lead mine, this was
rumoured to be gated. - the rumours were true, but who knows
next time...
