Do old land rover projects ever go to plan? Dropped the sump off
and pulled out pistons ready to fit high compression ones only
to find the no.1 crank journal badly scored and worn and the
rest not much better! this is on an engine that ran sweetly and
       had good oil pressure.
Anyway had a rummage round in my collection of spare engines as
i need the old girl back on the road next week to go on a
greenlaning mission to the isle of man and found a stripped 4.6
       that i had forgotten about!
After a quick inspection to check crank bearings and for signs
of loose liners and block cracking problems, all looks ok.
So it now resides in the stage 1 engine bay!
Still got to refit heads as i had no gaskets in stock, and will
need a bit of carb fettling to run right but its on the home
       straight now.
Will be a bit of animal with that in, think some disc brakes may
       be a good idea.

Fancy an overdrive might now be in order there, Spurge. That or
       big-up your tyres to 8.25 or 9.00.
Is the 4.6 cam staying in, for across-the-board Stage One
       upgrade?

Already got an overdrive, makes a stage 1 into a motorway
cruiser! Using the 3.9 cam to go with the old type front cover
and oil pump setup, only rover/land rover would build an engine
and leave a redundant oil gallery in it to suit the early oil
       pump setup.
The stage 1 clutch has to be the most over sized i have ever
seen, its bigger than the one in a td5 or disco3.
Anybody know which su carb needle would be best for running with
       the 4.6?

I'd give SU a ring on that one, Spurge...

They've got a RR option for '86 onwards, which means nothing
where a 4.6 is concerned, as they were (I think) all EFi. And I
think all the new Morgan +8s are the same. The old ones were
       3.9.
I reckon the SU folk would be the ones to give you the right
part for such bore displacement demand.

Heads on, cam followers lubed and fitted, next job pushrods
rocker shafts and covers. Getting nearer!

Back together and running! As usual with this project there was
a few quirks, mainly the radiator inlet decided to crack the
solder where it joins the tank, with my limited timescale,
rather than send it to the local (half an hour away) radiator
man I decided to solder it back myself, as i used to do a long
time ago when i repaired tractors. This at first seemed a bad
idea as i had completely forgotten how tricky it is, but after
using up all my dinner hour I ended up with a good joint and a
puddle of solder on the workshop floor.
Everything under the bonnet has gone back as it was, including
the early type rocker covers so it would take a rover v8 boffin
to spot the modification, will take a picture tomorrow but my
camera has hidden itself somewhere in the workshop.
First drive round the yard revealed an alarming amount of low
end torque and a large smile!

Ooooh yes I like the sound of that (the idea that is. I haven't
heard the engine - yet), 4.6 that looks like a 3.5!! Nice
       :smilewide: Sleeper Stagey!
