Brakes question - just remind me...
DIR By: Dave

The 88 is in need of attention to the front brakes. They're the
TLS flavour, always going out of adjustment, are a complete
bastard to bleed and so before I start I'm thinking of binning
them off in favour of some 109 rears.
Q: are the 11 inch drums that I have on the TLS the same as
those on the 109 rears?
To do the conversion I will need backplates, shoes, cylinders
and springs from a 109 - is there anything else needed that I
may have forgotten about?

Watch the hose threads/angles be different....... The drums are
identical. Mine are fine BTW.... dunno why people struggle with
TLS brakes.

Dave,
If it would help, you're more than welcome to pop up to ours to
see if we can improve things, I've still got the pressure
bleeding gizmo handy. *Ignore my Brake Bleeding Woes thread of
recent times I've now fixed my problem*

No they're not. The front TLS brake shoes are 11" diameter and
3" wide, the rear SLS brake shoes on a 109 are 11" diameter and
2 1/4" wide. The brake drums for the rear are narrower than
those on the front......as I found out when I tried to replace
my front drums and the replacements didn't fit!

I think only the 6 pot front brakes are 3" wide.
As far as I know, standard LWB front brakes are 2 1/4" wide.
The drums are different - the 2 1/4" wide drums have a 1/2" wide
chamfer on the outside edge - the 3" drums are the same size but
no chamfer.
Both are TLS though :rolleye0012:

Thanks. I will give you a call sometime this week.
I'll have a go at sorting the existing set up. The front
cylinder that I got from Wilkobob and fitted as an emergency
measure, about 3 weeks ago, is already leaking. Still, it was
made by Shitpart and I said at the time it wouldn't be long
before I was doing the job again. :smiley-furious:
Good luck with renewing all of your brake cylinders with
Shitpart, Simon. rofl

I stand corrected. My 109 is a 6 pot hence the 3" front brakes
comment, I had it in my head all 109s had the same.

I'm more or less free all week (after work) but next few
weekends I have a few nudey shoots to do. It's a hard life..
:rolleye0012:
Send me a text if I miss your call, something I'm good at
apparently.
