espacekiller, are the wing mirrors any use? They are more or
less entirely useless. But with no roof at least visibility is
decent.
Got to chase up where my 'new' cylinderhead is today, I'm
getting sick of being back on the bus heading into work. It's
much more fun driving in..

So turns out my cylinder head was beyond redemption but a stroke
of eBay luck and I found a replacement which had been fully
refurbished and bought for a car that got sold before it was
fitted. Got the original invoice and it cost $800, but courtesy
of eBay, mine for $290. It was only twenty minutes up the road
so the Land Rover gods must have been smiling down on me. Hard
work fitting it, just about everything that could go wrong, did.
My driveway resembles an oil slick. I couldn't get the oil
filter off so the whole unit had to come off and even armed with
the correct tool it still wouldn't budge. I had to resort to a
combination of molegrips, hammer and adjustable wrench... Then
there was the problem with the thread on the cylinder head for
the temperature sender. Spending $100 on a tap that I will
likely use just once, very annoying. Oh and the fuel pipe
snapped off.
All lashed back together now and it's running really well, too
good to be true almost. It no longer stalls at junctions and it
starts on the button. I also finally managed to get the exhaust
properly sealed to the manifold, it's actually quiet now and I'm
no longer being gassed with fumes. Very happy today!

Getting more confidence in the Old Girl now - on Saturday I
decided to drive 3 hours up the coast from Sydney to a place
called Catherine Hill Bay. No engine problems to report and the
temperature gauge stayed at a constant despite temperatures
hitting around 30 degrees Celsius. The only issues that came to
light were fading brakes and the clutch not disengaging as as it
should. I suspect there is air in the brake system somewhere,
plus there's an intermittent squeak coming from the front (which
is amusing when approaching stationary vehicles at traffic
lights, you can see the driver looking nervously in their
rearview mirrors) - I'll investigate that further next weekend.
As for the clutch this was easily fixed by adjusting the travel
on the peddle and some adjustment on the clutch slave cylinder
rod. The clutch now functions as it should, which is great when
driving in Sydney and having to repeatedly switch through all
the gears! Upon arriving at Catherine Hill Bay a guy came out of
his house to have a chat, he had a Stage 1 and was clearly a
Land Rover fanatic.

Thats a good looking lwb there gridlock
I am intruiged by the rear tub, I have never seen short wheel
arches like that before, initialli I thought it was a cobbled
lwb inner wing in the rear, but if I remember correctly from my
IIa they had a slightly rounded top over the wheel, it looks
like your also has a wheel well behind the wheel.
What does the other inner wing look like?

Someone on another forum posted the following information:
I did a reply to your post and pic this morning, but it vanished
into the ether,it looks like very nice vehicle which you have
done a good job of refurbishing, the front panel interests me,as
it has the looks of British MOD,as the Australian headlights
were just Lucas 7" round with the chrome ring in a flat
panel, not with the raised stamping, the "caution high voltage"
sign and the cutdown rear wheel boxes also indicate a special
purpose vehicle, also possibly Govt.,the British Govt. were
carrying out tests in Aust on their "Blue Streak" rocket about
that time,so it may have been one of those vehicles, with
sensitive measuring equipment fitted...'
So perhaps that's the explanation for the rear tub
configuration. The rear cut-out sections on mine are to access
storage - they are missing the lids though.
The squeak from my front brake drums has got increasingly worse
this week. Definitely time to get it looked at...

My new tilt arrived today, ordered on Friday, arrived in Sydney
Monday morning. I'm very impressed. The instructions advise
against threading the rear rope through the eyelets on the back
until the canvas as settled so that's why it's on in that way.
Really pleased with the quality, everything fits great and once
it's shrunk it should fit perfectly.
Now I have to sort out an oil leak from the oil pump.. it's
pouring down which is more than a little annoying. I also need
to re-wire the front headlights after they shorted out.
Door tops will be next..
