109 Series IIA

I may have put something up about this Land Rover before but
that was a while ago. Bought this in 2011, unseen from eBay.
Fortunately it turned out to be sound in the chassis / bulkhead
areas thanks to spending it's time in Mudgee, New South Wales -
well away from the coast and salty air. This is how it looked
the day I picked it up. I drove it about 200 metres to fill up
and found it wouldn’t start – dodgy starter motor. So we
abandoned it and headed off to some wineries. When we got back
an hour or so later it decided to kick into life.

Drove it back to Sydney which took around 7 hours and involved a
wrong turn which took me into the heart of the city and traffic
chaos. I think it was around this point that it blew the head
gasket. We made it home..

Anyway, up until a couple of months ago I really wasn’t in a
position to be able to give it the TLC it needed due to only
having an underground car park which was too dark and didn’t
provide enough space. I did manage to remove the roof and get
the tyres replaced after realising they were beyond lethal – the
tyre-fitter was afraid to go near it, thinking they could
explore at any moment (wire poking through 3 of the tyres).
I moved house a couple of months ago, almost entirely for the
parking spot – it’s bright and there’s space! Not sure my
neighbours realised quite what I’d be getting up to when I first
started taking it pieces. I’ve had a few complaints…. (think it
was the random orbital sander and the booming sound it made when
giving the bonnet attention). Though the paintwork looks
reasonable in the earlier pictures it was a poor re-spray job (I
think it was originally white, though that could just be the
primer) and there were lots of areas where the paint had cracked
and reacted so I decided early on that I would be respraying it.
Pictures show work I have done over the last eight weekends.
There’s still a few things that need tackling before I can
register and make road legal (seat belts, electrics, door seals,
and a possible issue with the brakes – think the drums may need
replacing). The main hindrance is money and time so I think it’s
going to be another month before it’s finally back on the road.

I painted it in acrylic paint, it went reasonably well but boy
was it a challenge! There are too many variables when painting.
Fortunately I was lucky with the weather, no wind and it wasn’t
freezing cold (if anything it was too hot and the paint probably
dried before hitting the bodywork in some cases). It now needs
to be lightly sanded and buffed and I think it will look pretty
good once that’s been done. Would I paint a car again? I don’t
think so. I would rather leave it to the experts.
Other less urgent, ‘to do’ tasks are to fit a rubber floor in
the back, sort out the bonnet. You’ll notice that the front
panel sits further forward than standard so I really need to
lengthen the bonnet so it sits correctly. The reason for the
panel moving forward is the Holden 6-Cylinder engine what
doesn’t give much space. I also want to buy a soft top and
sticks though these are hard to come by in Australia. When funds
allow it might be easier to buy new from the UK and get shipped
over.
Hope you like it. And before anything is said about the
8-spokes.. I am aware of their inadequacy and they will also be
getting replaced when funds allow and the right ones turn up.
I’m thinking chrome 8-spokes will work better. Kidding…
PS. Overspray on the rear wheel has been sorted..
PSS. The interior of the rear tub, is it standard? I have seen
others where the box sections on either side extend the whole
way across. Does anyone know why some are different? Thanks.

You've done a lot of good work, love the before and after shots.
In my SIII the side sections run all the way forward and the
spare wheel well is right behind the driver seat. But I am not
an expert. You picked the right colour, now find a truck cab
and it will be perfect!

Well Done
We have sprayed a few Land Rovers ourselves and it is a lot of
hard work.
Very nice Series you have there.

Looks tidy
I can't answer your questions. My '68 109 has full length boxes
in the rear. Any ideas why there is a round hole in the grille?

No idea why there's a hole in the grill, perhaps it had an
electric fan at some point in it's life. Thought about replacing
but it's part of it's story so I'll leave it. Surely someone
knows about the rear tub box sections and the differences /
reason behind the difference?
Parksy you may have played a part in the decision process with
regard colour - your 109 gave a lot of inspiration. I'd love to
get wheels like you had on it. They don't seem to come up often
in Australia and when they do you often find they're on the
other side of the country. That said, it's surprising what you
can pick up over here. It's been straight forward enough getting
things. Even Britpart has made it over here..

Funny I was going to mention colour!
Wheels are definitely something for the wish list
A straight edge (razor edge) bonnet might work better and be
easier to lengthen :-?

To the best of my knowledge the side boxes are full-length on
all 3-doors, certainly on all UK ones. Y
ours look to be from a 5-door.As does your floor (the 'ribbing'
looks like it stops the same as the side boxes)
Which is odd as the outer skin doesn't look to be any
different, though that could've been replaced when converted
from a 5-door

The ribbing has been removed but it did run the full length of
the tub. I've not seen any others like it. Maybe it will remain
a mystery.

Been hard at it behind the scenes, today I reached the final
milestone, getting it legal to drive. Yesterday I put it through
the 'Blue Slip', this is the Australian equivalent to the MOT.
Mine had been unregistered for over three months so it meant the
test was more extensive than the standard 'Green Slip' (it seems
way more complicated here than in the UK). So it failed, as
always on things you never expect and the things you think it
might be picked up on weren't a problem. Fails were: Missing
engine mounting bolt (fair enough!), illegal air filter (it had
a K&N filter, apparently this is illegal), wiper blades and 'oil
on the engine and gearbox'. Of the faults it was only the oil
one that had me concerned. So anyway, took it back home and
managed to sort everything out by applying liberal amounts of
engine degreaser. I was lying on my back for hours scrubbing.
Took it back to the test centre, it failed again on too much
oil. So raced home again and used another can of degreaser. It
was getting dark by this point, managed to race back before the
place closed and represent it. Result, it passed. I did feel a
bit ridiculous polishing up the engine but guess it didn't hurt.
So this morning I had to insure it, which meant getting the
Compulsory Third Party (CPT) insurance and I chose to get fully
comprehensive on top of that (you can just get the CPT, but as
far as I understand, it only covers injury against another
person, it doesn't cover repairs to vehicles or theft). Then I
had to go and register it and pick up the new number plates. All
in all, not a cheap exercise, I have spent the best part of
1,500 pounds for all this stuff...
Anyway, it's now road legal and I'm very pleased (except for the
misfire it has suddently developed!). I still need to purchase a
soft top for it, I'm going to have to get it shipped here. I'll
be using All Wheel Trim for that, but that's going to have to
wait until funds allow. I just bought the hoodsticks courtesy of
eBay and they cost an absolute fortune. I've been on the hunt
for them for over 12 months and only seen one other set which
were on the other side of the country. The ones I got were in
Sydney and after a clean up, they look pretty good.
Here are some pictures..

again quite different to the UK. Got the insurance company to
email me the letter of confirmation. Then I had to go to the
vehicle registration centre and pay more money to register and
get replacement number plates.
