why did my diff go bang

It started by me having to run around with 750's on the front
and 205's on the rear (don't ask ) then the spring on the high
ratio went without my knowing.
I started to feel some back lash through the gearbox and
suspected that running with different tires would wind up the
box ? then on Friday i was pulling out onto the main road lost
drive it came back after much swearing and general abuse so i
engaged fwh's and limped home. i pulled the half shafts hoping
it wasn't the diff but obviously wasnt going to be that lucky
so removed the old only to find quite a few extra bits lying
around.Now did it go bang with me being a total tit or just my
run of shit luck continuing ?

Are you saying you we're driving around in 4x4 with different
sized tyres ... It's not a god idea for any length of time with
the same sized tyres
If so that will have put some serious strain on the
transmission. If you did do that I am surprised the diff went
before the gearbox to be honest, the box is weaker
If you weren't then a "shit happens" incident

You have answered your own question, 4wd and tarmac is a
disaster add in odd tyres and I think you have been lucky not to
take the gearbox with it. Put it down to experience,

yes it was a very unfortunate turn of events and yes happy it's
not a broken gearbox, i will be more vigilant in the future
