son (then aged 11) along one of our local back lanes, and as we
passed a little field that I'd passed many times before, I said
to him ''look at that old Land Rover in the middle of the
       field'' (a derelict ex-mil. 109").
My lad then replied, ''yep, there's another one in the barn with
a tank on the back....'' - ''WHAT?'' says I, slamming
on the anchors. (& finally stopping 1/4 mile further on.
I'd never even noticed anything in the bloody barn!, - and that
was the first time I laid eyes on the truck I have come to know
       as 'Leo Sprayer'.
Not having a clue who it belonged to, I drove by, many times,
hoping to catch sight of the owner.
And, as luck would have it, one day, a sign appeared on the gate
of the field, with the owners 'phone number on it, that he'd
left, so a lorry driver delivering some hardcore to him, could
ring him, so he could come and unlock the gate.
Needless to say, I rang him that day, and asked if the motor was
for sale, - but as many people do, he thought the number plate
was worth a lot of money, and said he'd find out what it was
       worth.
Anyroadup, to cut a long story short, (you bored yet?) on a cold
January day in 1999, I bought it for £300. :8):
It has lain untouched since then,................until now.
My circumstances now allow me to start on the
       restoration/rebuild of Leo Sprayer.
As I don't have bottomless pockets, the project will be on a
budget(ish), meaning, I'll use as many serviceable part as
possible, but buy new when needed, and not re-use crap.
I'v scanned a few old 35mm pics for your perusal.
A genuine 'barn find'. (Excuse picture quality, flash fail.)

       Georgeous, innit?

       One of the gang.

Can't have a barn find, without a birds nest.

       Watch this space............ :8):

I started the stripdown this week, - between work and rain.
First things to be removed, were all the hoses.
Hope I can remember where these all go..........
  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2260017.jpg
Then, the regulators fom the back of the truck cab, and the
       tank.

  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2250001.jpg
       Next came the tank.
It was located in a solid frame, held in place by two big lugs,
and the only way to remove the tank, was to lever with a big
screwdriver, and jack it up from below.
  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2270036.jpg
  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2270037.jpg
With the tank out of the way, I could concentrate on four of the
baddest, rustiest bolts that were holding the framework to the
       shazzy.
After a fight, all but one came undone, and that sheared off,
       so, frame out.

(Can I just say at this point, photobucket is being an absolute
bastard, and it's taking me forever to put this little piece
together, - I'm on the verge of giving up with the pics.)
Leaving me with what I thought was a neat little chassis-cab.
  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2270042-1.jpg
The final job has been to remove the centre PTO powered
diaphragm pump, anybody recognise, or know anything about this
       pump? - as I haven't got a clue.

  HTML http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/kevlandy/LEO%20SPRAYER/P2280002.jpg
Next job on the agenda, will be close inspection of that teabag
that I call a chassis, and an attempt to buy up Britain's entire
       steel reserves,
       - to repair it.......... :-|

Exhaust now removed, fell into three pieces.
Rear prop off, - it's in good nick, should just need a re-grease
       and paint.
Both sills removed, - the last bolt on the pass. side took me
twenty minutes, before deciding to shear on the last couple of
turns. (Why do they do that?)
Drivers side mostly ok to remove, save the last bolt (again...)
being so corroded, I cut it out.
Next out, floors, seatbox, & cab, - 25 cutting discs on standby.
       Only two pics:
       Sexy. :8):

Floors removed, without much hassle, the seatbox is in very good
nick, and the tank has diesel in it, and doesn't leak.

Not a lot left of anything really, the bulkhead has gone, top
and bottom, and I think repairing it may be beyond my

Every nook & cranny on this motor is full of crud. - straw,
sand, soil, cobwebs, rust, black manky old grease, - cleaning
away the cack of years shoud be fun. :?

mates, that it won't be removed without a scrap, - so I'll leave
that for now, until I decide how to get it off, without
destroying the rear outrigger that it's clinging to.
Cracked on with removing the 'box.

For some reason, the bumper had been welded to the dumb irons at

So, today, I took advantage of the glorious weather, to do a
       bit.
I've spent today, cutting off the old dumb irons, & welding on a
       new pair.
It took around an hour until I was happy with the alignment, but
       I reckon I've cracked it.
I also had a play with my new toy today, - an auto-darkening
       helmet.
       - how have I managed all this time without one? - it's
       brilliant!
       Out with the old,

The UJ's are in good order, - which is nice.
Both swivels are kippered, so until replacements are sorted in
the new year, the axle & components, have been de-greased,
       de-rusted, & painted for re-assembly.
One swivel was empty, & the other filled with black, manky

I rang the old fellow that I bought the sprayer off in '99, to
have a chat, & get a little background on the truck.
His wife answered, and told me he'd passed away last year.
Rest in peace old chap, - I'll look after the Landy.

Much wire brushing has ensued and red oxide has been liberally
slapped on the bits that don't need attention, to protect
       through the Winter months.
I should be sorting some outriggers in the next few weeks.
Today I've had rather a productive day, in my opinion, weldizing
       patches.
I'm no welder, but I'm happy with the results, - nice and
       strong.
       - It's going to be a long job, as it gets worserer as I move
       towards the back.
       Some pics from Today.

Arsedness is agood thing. I wonder if you could fill the tank
with ale for Leafers? Then spray us all so we needn't bother
       drinking.....

Wow, there's some serious rust in that chassis, well done for
saving it. All that metalwork takes ages, but your project is
       moving forward.

No I'm chucking the centre pto, & spray gear in a skip, &
putting a tub on it so it doesn't look 'speshul' any more. ::)
