       bomb-proof

I like to use my 109 Series IIa year '71 Station Wagon for a
long trip e.g. around Africa in approximately one year. This
should not be a big issue since the car has been out for a few
longer trips. But there are still a few weak points I would like
       to solve.
       Engine:
2.5l diesel N/A block renovated, top repaired in Morocco after a
valve guide failure. Fan removed and replaced by a Kenlowe
electric fan. The exhaust is an altered series system.
       Suggestions?
       - New cylinder head?
       - 200/300 tdi conversation
       Gearbox:
First gearbox failed in Turkey - 1st gear broken. After repair
the box was leaking too much and got sealed at home. Next
problem - lay shaft broken in Morocco. The gearbox was replaced
by a renovated box before going to Albania. It is now leaking
(even with a breather) and whining a lot.
       Suggestions?
       - Renovating the 2a box?
       - Gearbox cooler?
       - Going for a R380 conversation?
       Rear axel:
Original Rover axel – no problems so far. But I know that the
diff is weaker than the Salisbury. Diff locks would be nice to
       have…
       Suggestions?
       Dynamo:
Original, but too little. Battery charging is not satisfying and
is probably causing premature ageing. A second battery would be
       desireable.
       Suggestions?
       - Changing to what?
I could buy a Defender of course but would like to travel old
style but with a good stomach feeling. Sand dunes should be
manageable as well as longer highway distances without loosing
       all liquids.
I like to “maintain” the Landy but would like to improve her as
good as I can to minimise the breakdown risk.

Definitely go for alternator and split charge battery set up

       Nice 109.
I like that vintage cars are used properly.
Is this the car from the german youtube video ?
       Albania 2012.
Split charge is a good tip.
Always power to start is a nice thing.
A Salisbury rear axle would be a easy upgrade.

keep it as original as you can. modified or unsual parts are a
pain to get sorted if they break.
Deisel/petrol availability is/was about the same, but you need
to carry less fuel to get a diesel about the place and it's less
       flammable.
tdi conversion won't be kind on your transmission, I'm not sure
how tricky an r380 conversion is but again that's permenant 4wd
       so front axle may suffer.
I'd pay attention to your suspension, make sure it's in fine
fettle, some decent tyres, though 750's are a bit more common
than 900's so it shouldn't be such an issue.
Anywhere north of Kenya you're in 'yota country, head south from
there and series bits shouldn't be too hard to come by.
Where are you planning on heading to?

Good Evening & welcome to the OLLR
Good plan and an even better vehicle. Our Series Hybrid gets
       places..
The 2.5 N/A in good shape, standard transmission and standard
axles will be fine if you have a good right foot and keep the
weight down. Forget the lockers - complicates things a lot and
       not really needed.
Really good service, replace what needs replacing and try to get
the whole vehicle back to the condition it was when is left the
       factory.
       All the best !

Welcome Pesto. Your trip sounds interesting and the 109 looks
       great.
If I were doing this and looking for some sensible upgrades I'd
       be going for the following:
       1) Alternator and split charge setup as Parksy says.
       2) Ashcroft 5 speed conversion mating an R380 5 speed main box
to series transfer box therefore keeping selectable 2 and 4
wheel drive eliminating the permanent 4x4 issue of the LT230.
       3) Salisbury* rear axle to deal with the extra torque and power
       of..
       4) 300Tdi engine. With the Ashcroft conversion the engine needs
moving forwards by 102mm to keep the propshafts standard, if
you're doing that you might as well move the mounts to the
correct place for the 300Tdi. As the 300Tdi was the ROW export
spec lump for 15 years plus parts would arguably be easier to
find than for any other power unit.
*It'd be worth seeking out a Salisbury axle from a stage one V8
for the higher 3.54:1 diff ratio, then fit an early Disco or
Range Rover front diff to match the ratios. If you have the
money to spend then you won't go far wrong with a Detroit
Truetrac or Detroit Locker to maximise available traction,
they're a purely mechanical fully automatic locking system for
       the diff.

We had one moment in a years travelling and 40000kms that the
locker helped, otherwise it wasn't really needed. When you're
driving your house about the place, you tend to be a bit risk
       averse.

       Hi parksy64,
Which alternator conversation do you recommend? What is your
       preferred split charge brand?

       Hi Th0ma_s,

       Hi Lucy,
There is just a rough plan. We met some travellers in Morocco
which were coming back from an around Africa trip. All their
stories were making us even more curious about the continent.
I've just been to the northern countries and want to see MORE. I
hope we will get the chance to brake out and that could be mid
of 2014. There are a lot of must see spots but the route is not
       decided.
1997 we went on our first long overland trip we did in a series
Land Rover. The landy was a 109 station 6pot which we bougth in
Sydney and drove up to Darwing in about 3 month. No major
brakedowns - beside a lost bolt on a rear spring, leaking
radiator, blocked fuel system... - manly due to superb
maintainance carried out by the seller who also was the first
       owner of the vehicle.
