New Swivels? Help please.

Hi guys,
Unfortunately a good clean of the old girl's undercarrige has
shown that the chrome is absolutely shot on the swivel chalices
*help* - so I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy new :(
Now I know Paddocks sell them but the last thing I want to do is
buy **itpart stuff - especially on an item like that and
especially after the fun I had with one of their fuel senders
and gaskets :smiley-furious:. Question is, do I have a choice?!
Can you guys recommend where to get them from if not from
Paddocks please?
I was hoping that our spares vehicle would be able to donate a
pair for the cause but it's past life must have been winching
boats up the beach...
Unfortunately with our car (main mode of transport) having gone
technical(!) the landy has been pressed into service before
we've been able to restore her so a few jobs have now been
pushed up the priority stack.
Thanks in advance.

Might be best to look for an Ex-Mil front axle on eBay. If yours
is 88" and you end up with a 109 axle, you get bigger
brakes.....

Worth paying for. And not questionable quality...

You can get them re-chromed, bodge over some Araldite, or just
resign yourself to changing the housing seals avery few months,
as the old ones get gouged by the pitting in the spheres. But
you're only putting of the inevitable and risking parching your
stub-axle UJs through periodic absence of lube.

Hi Albert,
I'll keep an eye out on e-bay in case one comes up -
unfortunately most people don't ship axles to Guernsey though!
Might get lucky though :)
Drew, many thanks for that! I'll give them a ring :)

I quite like LR Direct as they give you a choice of suppliers:

I've had plenty from LR Series and if they say OEM it will be,
for the price I think I'd buy from them as sourcing a decent
ex-MOD axle may not be geographically workable!

I think you will find most of the swivels are currently britpart
including the OEM stuff, really not very good quality at all, I
have had to use one as I could not find an alternative. The
chrome is really thin and poor the machining marks are showing
through the finish, i don't envisage it is going to last as long
as the original one on the other side.
Some people have ordered these from several scources and they
all seem to be sending the same shite out at the moment just
some are charging more than others. I plan to fit leather
gaitors in an attempt to help it last a bit longer, there are
loads of stories of these rusting within months.
I would be intrested to see what you get when you order the
"LAND ROVER" one from land rover direct at £130, i suspect it
will be the same unit put in a white box intead of a blue one.
If you do find a good scource with smoothe well chromed finish
please post up.

Unless a part comes sealed in Land Rover packaging how can we be
sure it's a genuine part. I've had parts which were meant to
have been genuine, but looked no better than the failed Britpart
part I'd just removed.

I think the problem is land rover themselves are using Britpart
as OEM for some bits.

Could be worth trying Blanchards? Expensive but they may have
some ex-MOD stock? Or just buy their ex-MOD chassis!
