Bollocks! Has anyone successfully reattached a water pump pully?

I have just finished the brakes on the IIB and fired her up
ready to go for a test drive. I had her ticking over in the yard
when I heard a tinking noise and just as I looked under the
engine cover the pully came adrift from the water pump drive
shaft. My initial thought was bollocks, but at least it's easy
enough to whack another pump on, but once I had unbolted the rad
fan prop shaft from the pully I realised it is different to the
standard 2.25 affair. It is a heavy cast pully with different
hole spacing's for the prop shaft rather than a fan, the actual
pully is directly on the pump shaft rather than having a hub.
So, my question is, how is it held onto the shaft, there is a
flat spot on the shaft but nothing in the pully, just a parallel
hole, was it a tight pressed fit? Here's some pics to explain it

If anyone has reattached one, or a hub on a standard one, or
knows if this design was used on anything else I'd love to know
about it, cheers.

I have never played with one like that but the pictures you show
look like a cotter pin should be fitted a bit like the old
style push bike peddle cranks. Is there a tapered hole in the
side of the pully for a pin ?

No, there are no holes in the pulley, and when it's on there's
no access to the back of it...

Is that a circlip groove around the end of the pinion, Mike?
Does any of the pin show through the end of the pulley cup?
If not, I'd have thought it sat in what appears to be a keyway,
relying on pressure of the prop-shaft to hold it on.
I've been out with a torch to look at mine, but the bash-plate
is still fixed underneath the cab and you can't make anything
out through the wheel-arch.

Thanks for having a look Drew. There's no circlip groove in the
shaft, and no keyway in the pulley to accept a key. As for the
pin protruding through the pulley, I'm not sure, as I haven't
put it back on since it fell off. I can't see that the prop held
it there either as it has a telescopic shaft which 'shortened'
enough to allow the pulley to come off the shaft (The prop was
on when it came off, if that makes sense). I'll investigate more
tomorrow after work...

Most water pump pulley flanges are a press fit. In the olden
days you could buy bearing kits and you were expected to be able
to press out the shaft to fit the bearings. In this throwaway
age it's easier to fit a whole new pump.

You can still get a kit here (and on ebay RTC3072D) thought this
might help but it doesn't other than to say you need a press.

How about sticking the pully in the oven for an hour then
slipping it on, (caution pully might be hot :2mo5pow:)

Looking at that I'd say it should be pressed on, I'll see how
tight it is and maybe look at some other securing method. Cheers
