Any advice for an old landcruiser engine conversion????

Hi
I have just got my hands on a Series 2a 109 station wagon. It
has an old toyota engine in it, i am pretty sure I have tracked
it down to a B series 3litre non turbo diesel from a 1979
Landcruiser BJ40. From what I can find out it is almost the same
power as the original 2.6 petrol but the problem I have is the
engine is currently 24volts.
My question is, does anyone know of a starter and alternator
running at 12volts that would work for this engine?
I have found with my Series 2A 88 running a 2.25 diesel , the
starter from a 200TDI fits and is half the size and weight but
still starts better than the original starter. Is there
something similar that may fit the toyota engine?

I have the Mazda 3.5 Tdi in my RRC and one waiting for the
110...

Hello
Have you checked to see it's 24 volts or just has twin batteries
? I thought :-? That Toyota's were 12 volt just with another
battery , no doubt a grown up will be along in a moment to
correct me :smilewide:

I know what you mean, the Hilux we have at work has twin battery
setup running 12volts. This is 24Volts, the landrover has been
in my family for about 20 years so it is not an unknown beast.
It is a nice conversion but a little on the loud side. I believe
the original 2.6 litre was about 90hp 133ftlbs and this is 80hp
144ftlbs, with RRdiffs in it it can be a bit harsh on the
driveshafts but it will plod along at quite a speed. At least 70
on the motorway, would not drive any faster than that officer
:rolleye0012:, only problem at that speed is the wandering.

I just got round to asking a pal who ran a 3.0l B series jap
engine in a series 3 years ago.
It started on 24v but ran on 12v. Two batteries wired so they
gave 24v when the starter solenoid was engaged but clunked back
to 12v once you let go of the key.
Evidently, it wasn't a very good engine, he had loads of trouble
with it cutting out even after injec pump/lift pump / injectors,
fuel lines overhaul; it would run for months just fine then all
of a sudden become a PITA.
Oh and it wasn't much of a goer, 'even more very typical' of a
diesel...............
