       I have the awful feeling...

... I may need a new head gasket. Not being the most technical
of types :haha:. The Bus had been sat doing not a lot for a
couple of months, then we moved house (on the day we had the
worst snow for 30 years) and it has been really hammered for a
few weeks moving everything, towing the trailer up and down etc.
I noticed the other day that after it has been started then
stopped water drips from the expansion tank pipe leaving a
little puddle. It doesn't need to have been running long to
start dripping. Other than that its running fine and the oil
looks Ok and so does the coolant. Any ideas?

Before you do anything drastic, Steve, invest in a new rad. cap.
A worn one allows the coolant to boil at a lower temperature,
giving the symptoms you've described. Fingers crossed! ;D

Can you look in the expansion tank, see if there's bubbles
       rising?

Check your oil. If it's the consistency of emulsion and a dirty
creamy black, water has got past the head gasket and into your
oil. Could also be an air lock in the cooling system or blocked
       rad.

It's possible for a tdi head gasket to let go without
contaminating the oil - Bitsa did this to me just after
christmas - ran fine, just threw water out of the radiator
overflow all the time it was running, unless you undid the rad
cap (at which point it harmlessly bubbled combustion gas through
       the coolant system and out).
Turned out to have blown between one of the center pots and a
waterway. I threw another gasket on it, and it's been fine
       since.

Right, I topped water back up and had it running on tick over or
half an hour with no leaks and no bubbles in the header. Got
chance later to take it for a spin up a big hill and everything
seems fine, running really well, oil and coolant look normal too
:-?. So I don't know why it has been dripping.
