Radiator fan

Now that the 200 tdi conversion has started i have been reading
lots of posts on different websites.
What stands out is the fact that a lot of people are saying that
there is no need for a fan. The engine will not require it.
They also say it will not fit.
Now when this is completed it will be doing a lot of miles,
first trip after teething problems are sorted will be to
Paderborn, Germany.(Get photos beside the Ausfart sign is a
must)
So if the 200 tdi fan does not fit, i have been on fleabay and
there is a twin Saab electric fan on there that has a thin
profile. I could incorporate a thermostat to switch it or have
it wired direct to an internal switch were it couuld be switched
as and when i need it.
Opinions please.

I know it's a bit different but the 300tdi in my 101 definitely
needs it for hot days and long hills. I think others on here
have suggested they need it for towing etc. In my opinion, best
have one.

I run a 200 tdi and in general use no fan needed but when put
under some load ie towing or offloading I do use my electric
fan.
As you said wired via switch in cab use when needed.

I had enough room to use a standard rad and the viscous fan, but
mine is a 6 pot with new mountings.

I fitted one off a disco in front of the rad, the pair wouldnt
fit so i cut the frame in half and used one.
Its on a thermo switch and has never come on but I havnt towed
the caravan since its been fitted.

Does any one know what the ideal temp for the fan to come on is.
Like I said on those long hills the water temp gauge reads 100
but the fan doesn't come on and I have set it quite low which I
think means the rad isn't that hot.

I've just fitted a leccy fan and used a thermo switch from CBS.
Much like the kenlowe switch you can dial in what point the fan
comes on at in relation to your temp guage.

Mines a Daewoo 'pusher', wired through a switch on the dash, -
never really used it though, apart from when sat ticking over
whilst laning in the Summertime.
No, not really needed, but you really should fit one, just in
case.

i find the tdi rarely needs a fan unless the engine is worked
hard or laning on warmer days
examples being, worked hard = heavy towing and lots of revs/fuel
being burnt, usually only required in hilly regions
laning/pay and play = very low speeds with minimal natural
draught flowing over the radiator, aggravated in the warmer
months
my bitsa i fitted a citroen bx pusher fan to controlled by a
flick switch and me keeping a little eye on the temperature
guage
my 109 still hasn't got a fan fitted nearly two years after
initially building it, no temperature guage apart from the back
of my hand in front of the shinburner, i have had a couple of
times when laning when i've thought it would be nice to have a
fan but i haven't boiled it yet
tdi's generally run exceptionally cool but that doesn't mean
they aren't at risk of overheating
