Burnt fingers, melted keys & melted wires.......

:wanker: Had the shite panic of my life tonight... managed to
get off work on time & though I would go out & play, dumped
noddy car in drive chucked on some old clothes and went out for
a blast in Landy. Jumped in threw my phone & keys in the dash
and set off, got no more than 1/2 mile and the dash tray
suddenly lit up like xmas sparks n shite all over and I thought
WTF?? cab filled with smoke, managed to pull up and dived in to
recover my phone and keys from where the sparks n smoke was
emminating from only to burn my fingers on the red hot key &
ring ( melted) threw them on the seat and it melted...
Pulled up the wired from the tray to find the offending
culprit.. bare wires! a red one (fused as per pic but did not
blow), connected to an old braided one going up into speedo
cluster I think then joined again dizzapearing through bulkhead
       as per pics...
So all in all a bit of a lame night out... but hey a job for
the weekend, rave out the wires to see the damage and splice in
some new cables and insulate well!

Only real 'lasting damage' is to my bleeding house key which was
burnt at the end too!!... went home, couldnt get in so had to
wait for our lass to come in...

Should be a plastic tray in there over those were. Betting its
heater blower or wipers that's affected.

Could've been a lot worse! Do you carry a fire extinguisher in
       your landy?

Similar thing happened to me a while back as I got back from
Devon. The last 60 odd miles I had everything switched on and as
I went to switch off on the drive the key wouldn't turn off and
was a bit warm.Found out the nylon bit in the switch had melted
from the current draw and the little plate that does the
switching was going wherever it wanted.Didn't burn out anything
but was getting there. The fuse box was melting.
I rebuilt the barrel holder with chemical metal, added loads of
relays, and checked that the fire extinguisher has a chance of
working. It's the nice 2a switch with the lighting switch
incorporated that costs at least 50 squid to replace so I had to
       fix it.
       I love electrickery.

When I got my 109 i took about 30' of unneeded wire out of the
dash most of it unfused live. Didn't get any smoke escape during
my ownership but there was 1 section of wire welded to the
       speedo casing.
Reconnected the original loom and got back such niceties as dash
       lights, temp & fuel gauges.
I've since added a few relays, mini mcbs battery disconnect etc.
       just for piece of mind.

I would the wires have been cut & joined at some point when the
bulkhead was repaired... I gathered there should be a full trim
bit of dash over the wires :wanker: so I suppose maybe years of
keys n shite being chucked in there will have chafed the wires
through... lol re the fire extinguisher yes I saw one in the
back when I got home but in the panic didnt realise it was
there!! theyy do make a mess though!!
*help* Anyone got a spare full dash wire cover trim thingy to
       flog me then ?????
