The Vintage Manxman.....

Just back from a few (very cold) days in the Isle of Man - a
first for us as we have never been before. Anyway, if anyone
remembers the former 'Old Glory' readers holidays, which have
now stopped, they always used a coach company called Thornes
Independent

Thornes decided when the Old Glory
trips stopped that they would carry on with them themselves, and
so it was that me and Mrs Strang headed across the Irish sea to
the IOM on the 'Vintage Manxman' trip, which utilised two 70's
coaches - a Bedford and an AEC, visiting many of the heritage
railways there - but sadly not the Snaefell Mountain Railway as
the power lines collapsed during the heavy snow of a few weeks
ago.

The IoM Electric Railway - we got a 'toast-rack' tram from
Ramsey to Douglas - takes about an hour and a quarter, but twice
that long to get warm again!

Edit to add:
It was a great well run trip, and I would thoroughly recommend
Thornes to anyone planning one of their other trips - note they
do one to the Great Dorset steam fair, where the coaches are
also exhibits. I think me and Mrs Strang were the youngest on
the trip, but even so, the rest of the folks on the trip were OK
still, and obviously everyone shared the same sort of interests.

Yeah it was well organised Dave - and the weather was OK, but

Went up the Snaefel mountain railway a few years ago. An ancient
bone shaking rickety old thing but totally awesomely beautifully
magnificent! Loved it! (And the Bushey's ale too - a spiritual
thing indeed).
Also went out laning with the IOM 4x4 club - got the 101
horrendously stuck in a bog. Broke everyone's recovery stuff
getting it out - but thats another story

Top stuff! My eldest brother moved across to Peel a few years
ago, keep meaning to do the railways and visit the Laxey wheel
etc. when I'm there, but haven't yet got around to it.
There a cracking little transport museum in Peel as well, in the
old schoolhouse by the harbour, a stonesthrow from the old Peel
boatbuilders, where the P50, Trident etc. were built. They've a
P50 in the museum, which they lift in through a window when it's
been out to a show.
I like how they do things over there, nice spot! Saw this on Mad
Sunday during TT week last year too.

I spotted a 101 and 2BFC while I was there, and a field (from a
train) full of various Land Rovers!
There is an event this year in Peel to celebrate the cars - chap
I was talking to said they were hoping to get 25 there.

Great trip Mark, this is what the top of Snaefell looked like
when Kath and I went a few years ago, was the last train of the
day and the café staff came down on it!!!
