Northwest by Series (Gatesgarth Pass and other tales)

Yesterday I met up with Allan and Chippers for a trip that had
been planned for months. Allan had got us a permit to drive
Gatesgarth Pass. Gatesgarth, in the Lake District, has got to be
the most stunning lane in the UK and has been described as one
the the most technical drives of any lane in the UK.
Only 12 4x4s are alllowed over on any given permit day and the
direction that it is driven alternates each time. Groups can be
no less than 2 and no more than 4 at a time. A few years ago a
group of OLLRers, myself included, set out to drive this lane. I
didn't make it due to a breakdown on the M6, which meant a ride
on the big yellow taxi. Meanwhile the others spent hours
dragging Chippers' motor, back onto its wheels in the pouring
rain after he tipped it on its side on one of the harpin bends.
Fortunately, this time, we had good weather and no one did any
damage. Motors with a wheelbase of over 100 inches are banned,
due to some of the hairpin bends that even require 88s to shunt
around. I think that after years of laning we can become
complacent, having driven on all sorts of lanes but I have to
say that this one is definitely not for novices!
After we got to the other side we stopped for some snap and as
we ate, a bunch of boingers came off the lane. Two Discgays and
a Defender 90. The driver of the Defender proceeded to give a
description of the lane and its difficulties until I stopped him
in his tracks by telling him that we knew all about it because
we'd just driven it! Looking at our motors he appeared not to
believe it! What these knobs don't realise is that series motors
have been driving terrain like this all over the world for 60+
years and for decades before anyone thought to stick biro
       springs under a Land Rover!
       Anway, on with the pics...

Then we went on to do another diffcult lane, where I almost
ended up in a river - sorry, no pics of that but here's a few of
the steep, loose bit and a bare bedrock section.

We did more today but due to the incessant rain I only got two
       pics.
       Who says series can't articulate?

An excellent couple of days laning. Thanks to Allan for
organising it and leading and thanks to Chippers for providing
the scoff in the absence of Icey.
Allan's post in the original thread:
A grand weekend trip, the lane was fantastic, I'd been very
apprehensive about it but we got a sunny day and all went well.
Thanks to Dave and Chippers for being good company. As usual
Daves pictures are stunningly better than mine but here's a
       couple.

Enjoyed this read back in 2010 too.
Dave and Luke will recall we had a similar experience with some
4x4s, which appeared to run on some sort of fermented rice
liquor, last year. All blow, no show ::)
