I have just got a RR diff for my 3series. What is involved in
changing the diff (rear) any pointers would be helpful.

I only have 1 so will not be using 4wd until I get another one
       to fit to the front

Well drain the oil, remove prop, unbolt drive flanges, pull out
the half shafts, unbolt the diff, give it a few taps to release
it, its quite heavy when your underneath the motor so be aware
you got to hold it, then just reverse the process to put the new
on in, fitting new gaskets on the diff and drive flangers or use
silicone instant gasket, but make sure all the oil is off.

Might be worth checking the pinion oil seal on the new diff see
if has been leaking, if it needs changing also look at the
pinion flange (where the seal runs) for dammage or a groove, it
needs to be smoothe . Would it not be better to wait until you
       have 2 diffs?

i've driven my 109 with odd ratio diffs in it for the best part
of two years now, as long as you don't attempt to use 4x4 on
hard packed surfaces it's no problem
if i need low box on hard packed surfaces all i have to do is
flip my FWH's over so they disengage the drive, i have used 4x4
a couple of times though when on really slippery surfaces to get
       me moving again

If its a 2.25 diesel dont bother with rangie diffs i tried it
and it buggered up the drive ability. Petrol and 200tdi should
       be ok though

Thanks for all that advice, much appreciated. I am only changing
one because I need to use the thing as my daily commuter and as
it is a 2.5TD it is revving out on the old diffs so I need a
higher cruising speed otherwise I would wait and do both
