Gearbox serial numbers & rebuild plates

Just a quick couple of questions to satisfy my curiosity please.
Is the gearbox number on the photo likely to mean it is the
original box for my 1980 series III.
Also, screwed onto the bellhousing is a brass plate stating that
the gearbox has been rebuilt at the factory with another serial
number stamped on it. Any ideas as to when the rebuild would
have been carried out?

Not sure about the brass plate but for help on the original

No you can't tell when it was re-conned, but given its serial
number and the end of series production I would say 75-85 for
the rebuild (doubt the factory did rebuilds much after the S3
was replaced) ... Of course it may have sat on a shelf for a
while before being fitted
By the fact it's a recon it certainly isn't your original, they
were on an exchange basis.
Besides that a suffix B is to early for a 1980 series 3

576730R is a 2.25 petrol & diesel factory rebuilt suffix A
gearbox, a suffix B (or C) would be stamped FRC2000R and a
suffix D RTC2705R. The factory recon boxes I've seen with the
gold plate have had the serial number ground off the box or
struck through with XXXXXXXXX, it's conceivable the bell housing
does not belong with the box I suppose. I don't know for sure
but I'd expect a 1980 series to be a suffix C or D, B seems a
bit early.

From the link on Bubbles first post the 904 gearbox suffix was
started in March 1980 which ties in as mine was first registered
in October 1980, and from the same link they changed from a
suffix B to a C at number 35600, some 2181 after mine. Perhaps
just the bellhousing has been changed at some point, although
if the rebuilt units were on an exchange basis who knows?
I was just interested in finding out what I could.
