       Hi all
I have a series 3 SWB 2.25 diesel 1982. Going to work this
morning everything seemed fine started as usual drove great then
five minutes later I gradually lost power and a knocking noise
started so I pulled over, engine cut out.
Started her again and As I was only 300yds from work slowly made
it there. Checked all the usual stuff oil ok water was low so I
started her again and after a minute or so the knocking noise
became apparent, sounded as though it was coming from the right
hand side,as you look at engine from the front.
I've got a feeling it is something to with the bottom end just
looking for some answers and advice on what to do next new
       engine or a rebuild.
       Thanks for looking

It does sound pretty terminal if it has lost power as well.
Not one of those "get better by itself" ones. Difficult to know
without dropping the sump / compression test type diagnostics.
       Sorry cant help

Had a problem years ago with my 2.25 3 bearing diesel, loss of
power, dense black smoke, knocking, after removing the injectors
and pump, having them checked and replacing them on the engine,
no better, turned out to be a clogged air filter :rolleye0012:

sounds like fuel starvation. check fuel lift pump and fuels
       filter.

Thanks for the quick replies. :smile1
Would those suggestions substantiate the very audible knocking
       sound and lack of smoke?
       Cheers

has it dropped a valve ?
i had one that did that - take rocker cover off run engine and
       look
it was actually caused by damaged little end but it was the
       valve that killed it :2mo5pow:

Difficult to tell when engine noises become apparent but right
       side noises can come through from the inlet/exhaust  manifold;
which goes back to what has been said above.
sticky valve, sticky cam follower/slide, bent push rod, dropped
       hot spot, bent engine :o
When mine sounded like a single cylinder cement mixer , turned
out to be a non seated push rod. ::)
As said, remove the rocker cover and start it up and have a good
look at whats going on with each component and it'll be a good
chance to see if enough oil is reaching head topside.
Good luck, hope it isn't as fecked as mine got in the end.
