i was taking the manifolds off my 2286 petrol yesterday...& this
got my mind thinkin.. has anyone successfuly fitted a turbo
charger to the standard series 3 petrol engine?
I dont recon it would be that hard to do given that all the
plumbing is on the same side. Would tdi bits fit?

To be honest I think you will struggle for space to package it
all into one place.
I must admit though if you get it to work I will be hot on your
heels to copy you...
I have been thinking of a supercharger arrangement, ideally one
from the mercedes C class as they are small and for about the
right size engine and in cheap/ plentiful supply.
They my thought was to use a military timing cover and try to
use the Mil alternator mounting brackets to fit it..
its a nice idea on paper...

I'm sure there was an aftermarket turbo that was offered back in
the day, I thought somebody on here had one but who had it
escapes me at this moment in time.

It wasn't Amy was it? I've got vague memories of one floating
about too.

Wasnt it that girl that eventually dragged the lump out and
tried to flog it as ebay rare ?
Trouble is a series motor wont put up with a lot of boost
without work AND being in top order .
You could always use the supercharger off a new mini ....small
and cheap to buy ..and power right through the rev range not
just when the turbo is spooled up ...again sensible boost levels
will help avoid the motor blowing itself to death .

There is a 2286 with an Eaton supercharger from an Aston on the
Icelandic competition circuits. It's a pretty good piece of kit,
but it is a LOT more involved than just bolting a charger on
there - custom front end, special pistons, different valves etc.

I think Ive got one of those turbo kits. :-? It came in the
bottom of a box of ebay spares. Looks proper but at the same
time a bit home made.

Amy's was a turbo'd 2.25 diesel, the same company did a petrol
conversion. Seem to remember some/one of the army's rally
Lightweights had one in it.

There is a rather nice series 2 near me with a supercharged 5
bearing engine fitted. It does have afew other mods, manifolds
exhaust etc,but it does go really well, and it's a daily driver.
