Piston Ring Gaps Question

In a 2.25/ 2.5 d, the spec data for the top ring is 0.35 -
0.50mm gap. Does this mean that when hot the gap is expected to
close by 0.15mm?
Obviously the gap can't be measured when the engine is hot, but
if it could the running gap would be between 0.2mm and 0.35mm
??????????????????????????
I'm just trying to get my head around whether of not I should
fit oversize rings . I measured the top ring gap to be 0.7mm in
the bore and the oil control ring gap at 0.65mm ( data says that
should be 0.279 - 0.406mm).
An oversize ring at 0.02'' ( 0.508 church of germany) would fit
with a gap too small and would need filing to the correct
tollerance.
Is this correct??

Hmmm Hard to get my head round that. I build lots of air cooled
motorcycle engines and usually allow 0.003" gap per inch of bore
diameter.
I checked the land rover manual and read the same figures as you
these seem a bit excessive but are what has been developed for
the engine.
I would be following your thoughts and adjusting a + 0.020" ring
to close things up to near factory spec.
