what oil and filter?

For my 1972 Series 3 2 1/4L Petrol?
When I had my last Landrover, 20 years ago, it was 20W50, and I
got my oil filters from a local Landrover dealer.
Wind forward to the present day, and my local motorist shop only
has 15W40 or 5W30 oil. and I'm looking to buy the filter mail
order to avoid a 50 mile round trip to the only Landrover parts
place up in these parts.
All I know about the filter is that it's a cartridge filter and
it's a bloody messy job to change it.
but what about the oil? can you still get 20W50? if not , what
will work in these old engines? I even remeber from my yoof and
old bangers, that Duchams Q was reckoned to be good for old worn
out engines.
so what does everyone use?

I am happy with Halfords Classic car engine oil ... which I
believe is 20 / 50 ... Im afraid I get my filters in town and
couldnt say what they are

Get my filters from paddocks and oil from wilkos od
morrisons,both do 20/50.

Looks like it's that 50 mile round trip to Halffords then as the
local place doesn't have 20/50 and if I'm going all that way, I
might as well call into the Landrover parts place for a filter.
It will almost certainly come in a blue box, surely they can't
shit that up can they?
Is it easy to identify which filter I want just from it being a
1972 2.25L petrol, or do I need to check engine numbers before I
go?
And what is the tip for changing the filter. I have fond
memories of laying on my back, reaching up at arms length,
unscrewing the canister, as the oil runs down your arm and if
you are lucky drips off your elbow. Otherwise it gets even
messier.

qwick tip whilst you have it apart drill and tap the canister in
the base and fit a bolt with a copper washer and maybe a bit of
sealant so next time you can drain the can first
or braise a nut on and drill through afterwards then fit bolt
:thumbs:
when tightening up can align to lowest point

Rocky mountain do a conversion kit so you can use spin on oil
filters, cost a few quid but quicker and cleaner to change.

Oh yes they can! I have heard horror stories about the paper
element collapsing and coming away from the edge. Can also end
up with low/lower oil pressure if the filter is shite.

Or if you're a lazy basatardo, just put a carrier bag* over it
to catch the oil as you unscrew it.
*Mostly free in England.

Standard oil filter is a LF598 (Fleetguard) and any motor factor
worth their salt will carry it.
