2.25 diesel crank case preasure.

A up folks,
Ive just put an early 80s 5 bearing 2.25 diesel in my series 3
as the old one with almost 290k on the clock was worn out. The
new to me engine was a bit of an unknown. Having been in a
series 3 that past its MOT sometime in 2011, it was removed for
being too smokey. I replaced the injectors which were well and
truely fooked with some almost brand new ones, droped it in and
it runs well and cleanly. Ive just been driving along a duel
carriage way for a number of miles at a steady 50 when I got an
increased diesel knock, plumes of bluey black out the back and
the smell of hot oil. I pulled over, switched off and had a look
under the bonnet to find oil everywhere. There was already a bit
of a leak from the bottom of the oil filler tube and it looked
like it had been breathing a bit in the past with some old oil
round the rocker breather. There was a bit of fresh oil round
the breather and the inside of the inlet manifold was oily. I
restarted the engine and it kicked out a load of bluey white
smoke but with a few revs it cleared and stayed clear at idle.
It behaved normally from then on. I drove it home on slower
roads with no problems. Ive taken the oil filler cap off and
there are visible fumes comeing out but i cant feel a lot of
preasure there even whilst giving it some revs. I did the same
with the rocker cover breather and again, fumes and a few oil
drips but not a lot in the way of preasure. The breather seal
was a bead of silicon and gauze was pretty well blocked with
thick gunky oil so thats being cleaned in petrol as i type this.
I may of overfilled the oil a bit last night when i topped it up
because of the filler tube leak. The oil was showing spot on max
when i pulled over and checked with engine obviously still warm.
Any Ideas ??

Head gasket blown into pushrod tube. It'll run like that for
months.... until one day it won't start. When you cold crank it
with no fuel, does it "odd leg" compression wise? If so, I
reckon the head needs coming off. Gasket set under a tenner....

Ile give it a try. Ile be picking a gasket set anyway as its
always handy to keep in the spares box. Thanks for the reply
Sir.

I don"t want to hijack yer post but that sounds a bit like mine.
I never thought about head gasket /push rod and planned to put
new pistons in one day.
Mine is worse if I run with oil level between normal and high to
stop the oil light coming on under heavy braking. Smokes less
when oil level normal or a bit lower.

Could be head gasket, but usually that will be a consistent
problem ... It ain't going away (not without being repaired
anyway)
Blowing oil out does sound like a gasket issue though, to get
enough pressure. Smoke would fit with poor combustion on one or
two cylinders.
If you have over filled it that wont have gone well ... When you
say running max do you mean max or normal. The dip stick has
three marks - min, normal, max. Should run between min and
normal . Max is for severe off road use to avoid starving the
oil pump.
Do you have the open breather, or is it connected back to the
inlet manifold?
For the cost, I would pull the head and look, it's not a
difficult job to do.
Divie ... Sounds like you have bigger problems to,worry about if
you are struggling for ok pressure that much

Oil dipstick on mine only has 2 marks, "l" and "H". I always
keep it up to the "H" mark as the vehicle spends a lot of time
off road due to my work on farms and in the small woodland I
manage. The oil was indeed overfull so after work, I drained it
and put the correct amount back in. I suspect there may be a
head gasket issue as whilst on my way to a job this morning, I
had a repeat performance, again whilst sitting at about 50mph on
a stretch of fast road. I pulled over straight away and as a
quick fix, i disconnected the pipe from breather to inlet
manifold and improvised an oil trap (caught the oil but vented
the fumes) from a pop bottle and a bit of bodge tape. It worked
ok, got me there and back again with no further inncidents.
Ile have the head off at the weekend to investigate. It will
also be a good chance to de-coke it if nothing else.
Also, I have been useing 10/40 semi synth in it as thats what my
local Land Rover parts place said they had been putting in 2.25
motors. Could useing this lower viscosity oil be having an
effect ? and will I be better off going back to good old 20/50
mineral oil in future ?
Cheers.

5988 Thanks for the info. I am really in denial about the
problem due to having to use the landie as my daily driver. I
pulled the engine out 18 months ago to do the rear main seal and
changed the shell bearings at the same time. The crank looks ok
and no abnormal wear or ovality when checked with a micrometer.
The seal is leaking again now but I dont think it is a problem
to leave it alone. When I can make the time I will fit new
pistons and oil pump and tart the head up. The engine is a
mongrel with a series 2 petrol bottom end and diesel top from a
previous owner.

Could just be a dodgy oil pressure sender. My petrol always puts
the light on under braking ... I know full well thereis nothing
worns, the sender is lying
If you have already checked the bottom end out, worry not. Lack
of oil pressure will be crank bearings or worn oil pump. You
have covered the crank so it's the pump (easy to revive) or the
sender lies

I replaced the oil sender in the previous diesel only to find
the replacement was dodgy. I took it back and swapped it for one
that worked. The parts place were under the impression that
there may of been a bad batch.
I have just ordered a head gasket set and I plan to overhaul the
head whilst it is off.
Thanks for your help 5988, and divie I hope its an easy fix for
you :)

Thanks all. I will get a new sender and give that a go. I am not
to far from Craddocks and will call one day on way home from
work. Funny thing is no smoke for the last couple of days now
that the oil level has dropped. It needs to run ok for another 5
months until I retire and get the time to do it properly as most
jobs I have to rush to get back on the road asap.
