Pulls up outside the house tonight, ready to back onto the
       drive.
Into reverse, 'clunk', - no drive. into low, -
       drive all OK.
Halfshaft probably. - bollocks, I really can't be arsed with
fucking around with that in this weather.

You have my sympathy. I did the same a while ago, pulled
into a petrol station, filled up started to drive off, clunk.
new shaft to hand, pulled the broken one, left a piece in the
diff "I fucking hate taking diffs out" Straightforward job,
two hpurs longer than it should have been.

It's a horrible feeling aint it, as soon as you hear it you know
exactly what's happened and it just fills you with "can't be
       arsedness".

happened to me after the first week of owning Maggie just
approaching the roundabout and there was an almighty bang that
scared me shitless, i thought some one had run into the back of
me, having never owned a series motor before i was flummoxed as
to why i had no drive (freewhing hubs not being engaged) i
pushed it off the roundabout (much to every bastards amusement
that just sat and watched me struggle ) Rang Simon and told him
i had broke it and it wouldn't move. He arrived and figured out
that it would move in 4whl drive and i drove it slowly home.
After a phone call to the 5th emergency service that is Mr
Gadget he told me the problem and i nicked a halfshaft off my
uncle and Richard came and helped me fit it, but the diff was
shagged so we fitted a new main gear in it and that lasted a
couple of days before i broke another cos the diff wasnt set up
correctly. But you live and learn dony ya.

Took an arsedness tablet this afternoon, & drained the diff, -
       'plop'...
       - Don't you just hate it when you drop the drain plug into that
       sticky, icky EP90?
Yup, it was a halfshaft, but to my suprise, it was the short
       one.
I automatically pulled out the long one first, as they've always
seemed to be the weakest in the past.
Unless I can find something suitably strong, long, & skinny
enough to bash out the broken bit from the other side, it's time
to lie on the floor with an oily, 56lb diff on my chest, so I
       can extract the little nasty.
I'm not rushing, - it was snowing here earlier... :-?

death, or get eaten by bats? - or shall I stay where I am, in

       front of me?
No contest really, is there? :-*
