S3 box reverse gear noise

ok as stated, it's damned noisy in reverse gear and luckily it's
not mine, it's a knocking/clicking type noise
it may be capable of surviving it for quite some years or it
might go bang tomorrow, i've no idea, i've also no idea of the
suffix i just know it's fitted in a tax exempt S3 so "could" be
the original but might not be
so i'm just curious as to what folks suggestions would be the
cause should i end up conscripted into sorting it out if it all
goes pear shaped

Chech handbrake linkage and adjustment before pulling the box.
Drop the rear prop off to listen for odd noises while underneath
( unless it can be heard in transfer neutral, which then points
squarely at the main box)

If it is tax exempt, then chances are it is an A suffix. 1st an
reverse are made of cheese and were changed on later boxes. The
case hardening wears off and pretty soon big chunks start
falling off the gears. This is probs causing the noise you are
hearing.

My understanding of the situation is the reverse gear on a
series 3 was the first "reverse alarm" they later developed into
the "beep beep" alarm that is fitted to commercial vehicles.

Toby has it I think, although in my experience suffix B boxes
suffer from the same thing too. (IIRC The fault on the suffix
A's that got fixed at suffix B was to do with the reverse idler
seizing onto it's shaft if you reversed long distances)
I would suggest if it's only used gently in reverse, it may last
some time - if used "vigorously" it probably has weeks to live.
I had one go, it got noisier and noisier, and one day it went
bang and all the teeth ripped off.
You will probably find if you open it up the layshaft reverse
teeth a knackered as well as the idler - certainly they have
been in boxes I've examined...

Unless the reverse shaft stop on the back of the top of the
transfer care has become maladjusted, and the gear is travelling
too far, therefore catching the casing internally?

i'll not mention anything to the owner i'll let him decide as
and when he thinks something needs doing, i know he'll be gentle
on it anyway as i'm struggling to get him to come laning at all
even on nice clean non scratchy lanes
