       109 brake freeplay

Having had a nightmare brake day i ve almost finished! found all
the bleed nipples solid so had to replace most of the cylinders.
Now i removed the leaking master cylinder and replaced it but it
had some spacer nuts added between the mounting pedal box and
the cylinder so it did nt push enough to pump fluid when i
fitted the new one so the strokes must be different. So faffing
about i removed the spacer nut bodge and presto nice pumping
occured! now they do not release so i need to set the free play.
My thinking is the pedal is hitting the stop before the master
cylinder has released properly so in theory if i shorten the rod
it should give it enough to release. Sound reasonable? i wonder
if the push rod is too long and hits the pedal box though hence
the nuts...if so il saw it off! IS there a stop adjuster on the
pedal box as i forgot to look in all my swearing! :loser:

The pedal box has a stop, it should be level with the clutch
pedal. Try the freeplay adjustment first, and don't cut the rod!
One nut either side of the pedal sleeve.

well the nut spacers were a bodge! The rod was half a cm too
long with the pedal adjuster backed off so I cut some off it and
it works perfectly now so I think its a slightly different
master cylinder they fitted from something else. All good now
but I need to bleed it better as air is still in the system but
il wait till I ve replaced some of the front cylinders. >Htlr<

       Hi,
I'm probably too late, but just joined today, so I don't know
       what everybody already knows.
Due to the design of LWB FRONT wheel cylinders, ie .. the bleed
nipple is only half way up, there is an air pocket above the
bleed nipple which in theory is impossible to bleed. It
frequently impossible to bleed in practice, too.
The technique is to wind the FRONT wheel adjusters fully off.
That allows thesprings to pull the shoes, and there for the
pistons, fully home,so there ain't no room for any air, no how.
Then bleed as normal, making sure the nipple is open enough to
allow fluid out easily. Adjust brakes when you have finished
       bleeding.
With the rear brakes, just bleed as normal.
Bottom of brake pedal should be 6.5 inches above the floor, at
rest, measured vertically. It is amazing the difference this can
       make.
THEN adjust the free play on pedal.
602 (which is the "last three" of my old RAF number.)
