       200 or 300 tdi

so looking at my tdi conversion in the 109.
200 tdi will need 300 manifolds and the engines are harder to
       find/more expensive now.
Id like to try a 300 really but il have to change the flywheel
housing.....easy. But the engine mount problem....... will this
work and would i need 2 of them? so is this easier??

Fit 200tdi straight bolt in,300 needs new chassis mounts and the
flywheel housing webs cut off the bottom, seen all sorts of
abortions trying to fit standard mounts to a 300 its not worth
the effort....get the grinder out! >rcker<

There are a lot of abortions out there. I made some when i
fitted the 300 in to my 1960 series 2 they came out well as did
the remote oil filterkit i made myself but it wasnt a 5 minute
       job !!

Can keep the flywheel housing - the bellhousing will fit the
gearbox no problem. You may have to trim the stiffening "ears"
off the bottom of the bellhousing however.

The answer to this is, you only need one, and "sort of".
What this does is convert the drivers side mount to fit on a
90/110/200tdi defender chassis mount. This isn't the same as a
series chassis mount. The passenger side will work using a 2.25
block mount just like a 200tdi does.
What you can then do is cut the drivers side series chassis
mount off, and weld an upside-down 2.25 block mount in it's
place - your chassis will then take anything fitted with mounts
to the 90/110/200 defender spec (you can fit the mounts off a
2.5na to a 2.25 if you ever want to go back to one), and will
also fit your adapter-plated 300 tdi.

       you don't have to have a 300tdi manifold/turbo to fit a 200tdi
into a 109 chassis, i've seen two different ways round the
       interference problem
first is to scallop a small section out of the chassis creating
a recess to clear the turbo (obviously weld new metal back in
       the hole)
i've also seen a 200tdi and the Series gearbox tilted to lift
the nearside and clear the chassis rail with the turbo
so there you go, it ISN'T essential to fit a 300 manifold
although i did as i liked the way it fits
the only "problem" is the outlet from the 300 compressor is a
little close to the bulkhead support which means it will
compress your 90 degree silicon bend, this again can be got
       round...
first you "could" cut the support to give clearance and maybe
plate back in from the inner wing side to ensure support
or the slightly trickier solution would be to clock the
compressor housing (this isn't as simple as with the 200turbo)
you'll need to fabricate a wastegate actuator mount at the very
       least
i've not done either modification personally with my 300turbo or
bulkhead support and seem to be getting away with it (the elbow
is surviving any vibration at present), although i have seen a
picture thread on facebook where the turbo was clocked (a while
back now) and heard several folks suggest chopping the bulkhead
support, both sounding viable solutions to the clearance problem

^^^ Fitting a defender 200 set of manifolds would be the easiest
by far, although sadly these are probably the most expensive to
       get hold of. :)

Right so the least messing about would be to get a a defender
200tdi and cut the drivers side chassis mount off and weld an
upside down 2.25 engine mount to it??

No if you are using the 200TDI you can just use the existing
       engine/chassis mounts.
It's only when you use a 300TDI that you need to modify the
mounting situation, and it's because the oil filter assembly
gets in the way of the engine mounting holes and the filter
cartridge clashes with the chassis mount.
I used a remote oil filter/takeoff plate and have managed to
retain both chassis and engine mount positions.

the defender 200 pump hits the engine mount does it not?

In short, there are three possible blocks/timing cases, and
       three possible turbos.
200tdi block, disco timing case. Fits on existing engine mounts,
using block mounts off a series.
200tdi block, defender timing case. Needs drivers engine mount
cutting off chassis, and a 2.25 block mount welding on
       upsidedown in it's place.
300tdi (all versions). Drivers engine mount doesn't fit, old
filter fits existing chassis mount. Various solutions available,
       but nothing completely "bolt on".
Turbochargers (any of which can be fitted to any engine)
200tdi disco. Cheap, available, but hits chassis unless some
modification is made to the chassis or engine mountings.
200tdi defender. Expensive/hard to find (generally fetch
£200ish), fits a 109" with no mods and fairly nice pipework.
Loses a couple of bhp from disco version.
300tdi. Reasonable price (<£100), fits a 109" with no mods and
has a nice pipework layout. Turbo spools a little faster and
boosts higher, giving marginally better performance against a
       200tdi unit.
