Brakes grabbing...

This one has me stumped. On my 88" the nearside front wheel will
lock up with a VERY light application of the brake pedal,
obviously more often in wet weather, especially with crossplies!
This usually happens in the morning when it is cold and it has
been stood for a while (i.e. overnight). After a few careful
brake applications the problem goes away and the brakes seem to
work normally. There is no dragging, no slow release of the
pedal or anything like that. Shoes are chamfered as they should
be.
There is a slight pull to the left on the brakes which I need to
check adjustment and/or oil leaks for the source of that. This
would partly explain why it locks up the nearside front only,
but still doesn't explain as to why it does it at all. My only
guess is it could be a light rust coating developing overnight,
but not in the offside due to contaminated shoes or oil leak? No
sign of an oil leak on the backplate/drum/wheel, and no fluid
loss from the system. I can't think of anything else at the
moment!
Any ideas? I'm running the 109" setup with 11" TLS front brakes
with the mechanical servo operating off the pedal box. Dual
circuit too if that matters.
To be honest, the 88" is getting neglected a bit at the moment
maintenance-wise. The weather is awful, especially when I am
home from work and any spare time on weekends n that is spent
trying to get the Carawagon finished ASAP. Really needs a
weekend or so spending on it and giving it a good service. I
know it is well overdue an oil change at the moment :banghead

Summat similar on the old 2a, baffling but improved when I
replaced the return springs. They were attached correctly but
the shorter one (I think) was too weak.

Hmm. If you used Shite springs, one may have broken the curled
end off. Then from there, the is so little resistance, that
single shoe will move first, giving the grabbing effect, but
once the other three fronts take up the slack, all is normal.
Get the bloody wheel off!

Mine would try to throw you through the windscreen for ages, no
apparent reason for this and it was worse after a night of rain.
The problem went after swapping my unbranded shoes for a pair of
Mintex.
It was that bad if it had rained over night I would drive in
first gear and press the brakes as hard as I could whilst still
maintaining motion.
No rust was ever found in the drum when checking before driving.
It was like one side had shoes made from a different lining
material which took on different properties when damp.

Wish I could get my brakes to grab at all ! Going through the
dreaded bleeding thing at mo. :smiley-furious: I used to get
something similar this from cold and found that the wheel
cylinder was partially seized on the opposite side. Once a few
pedal pumps were made it 'loosened up' a bit so the brakes
returned to normal. The following morning it had seized up again
making the brakes pull something rotten.

Springs in it are as it came to me. I would guess originals. I
don't see how it can be that anyway as after a few applications
the brakes will be spot on for the rest of the journey/day.
Strangely it has been fine all day today.

Just a thought.. have you checked the wheel bearing end float?
I had a similar problem on Lola when we first got her. When I
first used the brakes it would pull to one side heavily after
using them a few times it would pull up straight. After driving
for a while not using them again it would revert to pulling to
one side.. It turned out to be a front worn wheel bearing.

Patrick's Carawagon (6 pot brakes) does the same every time it's
first driven after standing for more than a day or so.
If you're not ready for it you can get quite a shock as the
fronts lock up completely with the first application, no matter
how light.
We've been known to go up and down the drive half a dozen times
at increasing speeds and they lock as soon as you touch the
pedal - we've got the skidmarks to prove it!
What we have found is that they won't lock at above 30mph or so,
so Patrick usually sets off down the road and starts applying
the brakes gently once he gets over 30mph.
A couple of applications like that and they are fine for the
rest of the day.
They are all new cylinders, original drums, new springs and
chamfered Mintex shoes.
When we get time, We'll probably pull them off and check the
springs again - can't think what else it could be now.

Got a theme going here! My series three with 11" fronts pulls to
the left on 1st and 2nd application of the day then it is ok. It
even passed MOT on brake balance buggered if I can find the
problem. Mintex linings, new adjusters the whole jobs been done
and still it does it. Worse after standing in damp. Other than
that it stops well.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem and not the
only one who is stumped by it! I'll have a look at the weekend
and see if anything is obvious, but I have had this problem for
a while and not noticed anything when I have worked on the front
end before.
