Out with one 2a - in with a new!
By: Landrolaf2a Date: February 11, 2013, 3:05 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi chaps, long time no hear! Do I dare to tell you but my 1963
2a diesel is now advertising classic British engeneering on an
old farm of a friend of mine in the German countryside after an
adventurous trip via Esbjerg to the old East of Germany over
Christmas (very cold, flat tire, failing brakes...). It went
through the meticulous checks of the German TUV to get the
important 'H' plate for historic vehicles and is now turning
heads everywhere it goes. 'That's treason' I hear you say but in
my defense, my mate is as 'anglophile' (sounds like paedophile
but it is something else) and lived here for some years and
twisted my arm to sell it to him to put it to use on his farm
and to have some fun with his growing number of kids.
Anyway, the addiction made me buy another one straight away: A
1965 2a that underwent a rebuild some 5 years ago – mainly galv
chassis, tubeless tires, and Perkins Prima conversion, including
veg oil setup with a pre-heating and two tank system. It was
unloved for some time and I probably paid too much for it but I
could not resist, especially since all the hard work had been
done to keep it, possibly even as a daily runner. This is how it
looked on the pictures (in reality, moss was growing on it...):

Well, it already let me down on the way back from picking it up
with probably an empty tank due to a stuck fuel sensor and
blocked lift pump but hey... I now try to bring her back to old
glory and already removed some of the odd stuff po’s put in, eg
checker plate on the wings, useless and disconnected modern
water temp gauges, rubbish plastic switches, broken electric rad
fan etx. It’s getting there but the electrix are a nightmare...
two things fixed, three new faults appearing... haven’t tried
the veg oil yet, I think a po disconnected it as well but I’m
interested in at least having the option of using it now and
then. As I would ask my students: ‘Any comments, questions,
remarks?’

Wondered where you'd got to.
Been past your place (if you still live there) a couple of times
but no Series.
If I get a chance, I'll come & bang on your door next time I'm
passing. :smilewide:

Any time, Kev, still the same place. Was busy with work crap
second half of last year but you should have seen me working
over the past weeks in the cold, rain, snow, dark ... still need
a dry place to work in LE ... can offer a cuppa & digestives to
pick your brain over the wiring of this beast.., the dodgy
steering and clutch ... :banghead

Hi again Olaf, your ears must have been burning recently, so
when will she be running?
More pics please

Hi hippydave, thanks - it has a lot of potential me thinks and
the perkins is much more powerfull than the 2 1/4 in my previous
one. It has the overdrive and free-wheeling hubs (not that I am
particularly keen on those). But I still don't know if I can
live with its lack of originality, eg debender seats, 4 single
seats in the back, door instead of cat flap etx. But will see
what I can do to get it back a bit. It definetely is more usable
on a daily basis (eg to get the rugby kids in and out) - and no
welding in the forseable future... How is your chassis swap
coming along?

...thanks harryhedghog! My mistake - you were in for a chassis
swap and not hippydave, isn't it? ...yes, burning ears and red
cheeks is what i was aiming for...

...keep it going - greenlaning starts soon!
Some more pics from the seller and how it was. Removed some of
the un-original stuff already, especially from the dash:

..silly things like the rad fan being stuck (replaced with old
kenlowe fan and termostat), horn being on a separete button on
the dash (because the switch in the wheel was slightly off) I
could reverse, replacing/removing additional washer and light
switches on the dash, closer to origninal with old switches,
re-installing the lucas plugs for the inspection lamp, removing
the ash tray panel and the water gauge panel on the right (I
keep the radio for the moment, though, might be useful ...). As
soon as it gets dryer and warmer, I have to address the leaves -
very rusty... Is waxoil still the thing to go for?
And, the retaining straps on the rear axle, missing at the
moment, should I bother to put them in again? Also, the exhaust
of this Prima-conversion is way to low for off-roading (and on
its way out). I am planning on putting in a more original
exhaust that goes all the way to right in the rear but I am not
sure if I can get it to fit the perkins. The air intake is
behind the grill in the bottom right corner - also way to low
for off-roading... ... Got a cheap kenlowe fan off the bay
(already cracked in mail) and repaired/refurbished it to replace
the rotten old one:

even though the beast is generally in good shape, lots to think
about, I guess...
