I really like this thread, (old) motorcycles have been my first
passion in life, even since I was a kid. When Fireblades and
ZXR's were all the rage I was dreaming about Bigport AJS and
Cammy Velocettes.... I always loved the looks of twenties and
thirties motorcycles especially!
Anyway... My more sensible summer ride;
A 1978 FLH Harley, 1340cc Shovelhead

Last year I found this project: a 1930 Terrot HSST, a French OHV
single and not very common to find:

This will really be a challenging project! It runs but it
probably needs a (partial) rebuilt, it has quite some
non-original parts and my aim is to restore it back to its
original specs (or at least right for the era). Will be a
multi-year project probably. First order of business is to strip
it down and get somebody to rebuilt the engine (as it's mainly
cast iron it's quite a speciality job and I haven't found the
right man for it yet..... Yeti, if you now somebody on your side
of the water??)

Never been a motorbike man but still love to see them.Our first
car was one of those Ford Y as above.
prefer my 65 2A Dormobile. Who owns the Rudge, have just found
in my pile of things worth keeping Pitmans 1936 Book of the
Rudge, a joy for anyone with a liking for Rudges.
Would like it to go to someone who understands them.

Growing up in the 80s and being more of a Vespa PX man, this
isn't generally a topic I'd contribute to (nor, the forum as a
whole, the dynamic it's taking of late). But old skool European
bikes, I can really go for. Especially 60s/70s Norton Commando
and the throaty Italian rides of the same era like Moto Guzzi,
Laverda and Ducati. And it's this latter marque which caught my
eye, yesterday.
Eldest son is 14 next week, which means that after a cursory
one-day test he can start shooting the French strip on a 50cc.
So we took ourselves up to the nearby town of Ruffec, where a
new concession has just opened for, amongst others, the Derbi
brand, which I believe are part of Piaggio. For what my lad
wants and the scope he's allowed under French law at 14, they're
where it's at, apparently.
After a bit of humming and ha'ing, I ended-up spunking a certain
figure on a cross-look road bike, reckoning it's better for him
to have something new at this point; a few years of
trouble-free, warrantied riding before the realities of bigger
machines and having to be satisfied with a 2nd-hand do'er-upper
hit home.
Anyway, turns out the owner of the dealership is one Nicolas
Ferrant, who is no stranger to success on the European circuit
at a certain level (can't recall if it's 125 or 250).
Pictures of him in action were all over the walls, kneeing his
horse 'round some tarmac bend and a few of him on podiums.
Really nice guy and a nice experience to be face-to-face with an
enthusiast, as opposed to a soulless sales jockey. And what was
even nicer was the fact that he had a couple of his old race
bikes in the developing showroom...

components of 'Dukes' of other eras...

Yes!...he likes Ducati, of which he is also a dealer. But,
better still, he's in to the old Brit marques and has been a
regular participant at the French re-enactments of the old
'Ton-up' scene of 1950s UK cafe racing.
Even better still, he's just signed a concession deal with
Norton and is eager to take delivery of a pair of the new
Commando 961s. But it's a bit of a waiting list.
When we go and collect the lad's bike, I'll get a few more snaps
of his photo gallery and his collection of rallye plaques. Doubt
he'll have his Donnington machines in though, as there's a bit
of a wait.

A shakedown run on my 1976 Triumph T140V 750 Bonneville this
morning, had me paying a visit to Ramsbottom station on the East
Lancashire Railway, where they kindly allowed me to take the
bike onto the platform for a few shots as the 1948 engine
'Sapper' pulled in:

Great pictures Drew and Yeti! That second Ducati looks
interesting, has some Mike Hailwood replica colours but it's
something else.
Yeti, is your T140 a 5 speed allready?
Last week I went to a veteran motorcycle event, shot some great
pics of some fabulous old bikes. Makes me really want to start
on my old Terrot. In the meantime I've been browsing
Leboncoin.fr and Ebay.fr for some essential parts for it, which
is quite amusing. Too bad some French sellers do not respond on
foreign requests and apparently arent to eager to use paypal.
Different stuff than to just order your part at John Craddocks,
this is more searching which makes it also fun!
Last week I found the right saddle I need for the bike and now
I'm working on the correct oiltank... good to see there's still
some rusty stuff available for these kind of bikes!
