If it's the one armed chap with the distinctive sideburns then
it was a 2 litre from a Rover car (same block as the Discovery
MPI). You don't see many of them about, but I'll bet they go
well in an 88" in speed events.

Rather frighteningly...last time I looked in Gareth Almond's
racing 88 which admittedly was quite a few years ago it was a
manual :eek:
Uses the box from a manual Discgay Mpi and the lever modded to
be brought right up to the steering wheel. I gather he pins the
wheel with his leg while quickly changing gear. May have gone
auto since mind!

The more I think about it, the more I think you are correct,
Phil. I've still go the mag somewhere (LRW, I think). I'll have
to look it up.

Essex V6....C3....Ashcroft adapted S3 Transfer 'box...
Great conversion if I could get the fecker to hold it's oil

Hi
My stage1 is now a 300tdi Auto - goes well & drinks a little
less than the 200/lt77 combo that was in it. (Last tank full
gave 30.5mpg including a fair bit of moderate haste trips to
work,) Acceleration is good to scary, and so far, a month and
some heavy towing (far too much in a sankey, actually got to the
bumpstops!) and I'm still happy with it.
May need to consider disc brakes soon as reverse can overpower
the standard drums.
The only pain in the arse was doing the kickdown cable - a total
ballache of a job. Only other change I'd like is to make the TC
lockup work in 3rd as well as 4th.
Lucy's 88 has a v8/BW66/series transfer combo which will be a
lot of fun when I finally get the brake bands sorted out.

I've mounted the lever in the highly butchered tunnel with a bit
of reinforcement to reduce flex. Had to trim the webs on the
high/low turret extension to get it in. I'll get some pics
sorted if you like.
It all fits together remarkably well in my setup, the
transmission oil cooler fits across under the intercooler (Td5)
just in front of the original 300tdi radiator. I've yet to
connect up the oil over temp switch - may go for a gauge instead
yet.
The intercooler pipe work is a bit convoluted, but does what it
should. The 16" kenlow from my older s3 v8 now cools the lot
using the original AC fan switch. It has only run once so far.
The heater works the best it ever has. :gay:
Other than needing to have a major tidy up especially of the
wiring in the engine bay and replacing a few of the hoses with
new(er) ones, it's all about finished.

donor vehicle

There was a particularly well engineered S2a 300tdi auto at
LATP. I have some photo's interior and underside which I will
try and post on here.
The rear prop looked a reasonable length :o but the engine
certainly appeared to be mounted quite far forward.
