As many who know me from other forums...I'd love to do an auto
       conversion to The Shed...
I'll be following this thread with interest!
I certainly enjoy driving The Shed in its standard trim. I'd
like improved fuel economy (who wouldn't!), a bit less noise at
speed (I use the term "speed" loosely, and I'm on the lookout
for an overdrive to assist with this improvement), a heater
would remove some of the chill (got one to fit!) and similarly
some interior insulation would help with the heating and noise
       issues...
Ok...back on topic (before I get slated for apparently
criticising virtually all of the features which make our beloved
       Series Landy's so loveable!!!)

G'day chaps, as my bro mentioned [Albert Ross] i have a high
ratio transfer box with an adapter for either an auto box or SD1
i don't know which but would be interested to see if a Lt77 box
would couple up to the conversion adapter using a series
       transfer.
I have had it a good few years now so can't remember but then
thinking out load it was in an 88 as a auto V8 so i guess the
SD1 box is out of the question :banghead.
Your answers on a post card please :-?. Catch you later.
       R-Rose.

High ratio transfer box from an auto is probably a 1.03:1 (or
some ratio very close to that) LT230 that was originally bolted
       to a 3 speed V8 auto in a late 70s/early 80s rangie. AFAIK the
same transferbox will bolt right on to a LT77 or R380, although
why you would want that tall a ratio behind one I'm not sure.
The other thing it could be is a borg warner chain drive unit,
with a viscous coupling in the centre, rather than a diff. If
       it's that, I *think* it's interchangeable with an LT230 - the
serious trialing types like them (ask LandyPhil, I'm fairly sure
       his coilsprung trialer runs one).

G'day John, thanks for that i think my best bet is to get my
lass to put up a couple of pictures but i would like it for my
4203 Perkins thats a slogger but then i like to be the odd ball
       as well.

The Ashcroft kit uses the black cab gearbox to fit behind a
four-pot as Jim describes. In fact I believe it is how Ashcrofts
       got started.
They also did one using the 3 speed Torqflite box from Jaguars,
with a series transfer box behind to use in V8 leafers >rock<
rare as rocking horse doo doo these days but they are out there!

       > I read an article in LRM about 10 years ago and there was a
one-armed bloke with an autobox in a 2a which he used for comp
safari IIRC. Can't remember the engine though. I wonder if it's
the same chap Jim was on about? He was from Burnley or
       somewhere.

If it's the one armed chap with the distinctive sideburns then
it was a 2 litre from a Rover car (same block as the Discovery
MPI). You don't see many of them about, but I'll bet they go
well in an 88" in speed events.

I'm not entirely sure it was an autobox. :o Last time I saw
"The Moorland Warrior" as it was known it was running a short
bellhousing-ing R380 with modified gear linkage that basically
brought it up to the steering wheel. The column was mounted in
close to his knees so he could change gear uberfast and knee the
       steering wheel if required!
Gareth Almond twas his name. Utter Legend. Engine was from a
Rover Tomcat so was the blown mpi engine. Adjustable from 2 to
       300bhp!!!

That's the chap I was thinking of - I remember speaking to him a
few years back when I was servicing for ACR at a hillrally,
'cause he was quite interested in the KV6+auto setup (and no,
that is emphatically not an easy way to get an autobox into an
       88" package!).

Roland tried to offer a full KV6/JATCO set up for the racer for
I think about £2500 ready to race but it deserves better than my
       old dog of a series!

       just read this thread,
has anyone got any further with fitting a 300tdi and autobox or
       a V8 and auto?
I'm going to fit a 300 in my 109 wagon and thought I could slip
an auto in at the same time
I know it might seem a bit :gay: to some but I've been driving
autos for years as my Mrs suffers with arthritis it would allow
       her to drive the 109
