automatic box in a series 3

has it ever been done before ?
what would it be like ?

Used to be a 2a in Wigton with the 4spd ZF (and V8).
A whole load of of work to make it fit (this one still used an
LT230) as everything had to be moved/opened out.
Douglas Bader or serious trialer plans aside the question is
why?
I believe back in the 70's there was a firm offering an auto
conversion with a 3 spd box but I don't know which. A fellow
trialer has an old box of mine which is a Borg Warner T54
possible mated to a series tcase. He might be tempted to part
with it as well.

Yes, it has been done since the late 60s, using Austin FX3
parts, BW35 or 65, as all the flywheel housing and torque
plate/convertor fit the 2286 unit, and latterly using an
Ashcroft Transfer case kit. I would like to do my 109 using the
Ashcroft stuff, as I hear it worked well, if a little
slow/stationary. I know of a person with a stripped kit, but he
ain't releasing it. I asked like. Reminds me, I need to research
it for him! There was a so converted early 90 doing the RTV
circuit in the West of England in the late 80s/Early 90s, before
autoboxes/4 cylinder engines became popular in Discos etc.. IIRC
the chap was a "victim" of Thalidomide, but never let it stop
him doing what he bloody well wanted. I have also seen one this
year in a late 1970s Swiss Military coil sprung 100" prototype
with a 2286 5BRG unit, RR pas, and aforementioned autobox... all
factory standard pre-production stuff (Built at time of Leafer
production, so Leafer content)

Must admit I like the idea of an automatic V8 series with disc
brakes at the front...
It might have to be my next major project...

IF/when I Tdi the FFrock ...I may consider an auto box,Tdi
powah'd camping barge would be ace .
Anyone know IF a disgay auto would fit ????

I'm sure there was an article a while back in LRO / LRM
featuring a series motor with an auto. Fitted for the owd fella
who'd had it since year dot and wanted to keep driving it but
not cause him pain every time he changed gear.
I might still have the mag but it could take a while to sift
through them all.................

I remember reading somthing years ago about using the autobox
out of a Rover SD1 but that was with 3.5 v8 in a series.

Have you ever driven a auto discgay ian? You have to book a
diary appointment to pull out of a major junction, the fuel
consumption is dire, and when crusing at speed, if you give them
a bit more throttle to maintain pace up a hill, they tend to go
into kickdown. As far as I can tell, no-one ever test drove one
when they designed them, or they surely would have been a bit
better. I can't really see that one in a series would be any
better.
That said, if you want to try, I have all the bits you would
need available at very favorable prices, as there is a half
dismembered 300tdi auto discgay in the workshop being broken at
the moment. Pysically it would probably be possible to get the
box into a 109" - I doubt it would go in an 88" as the
bellhousing is much longer than a long stick LT77, and there is
no "stubby" alternative box available that I'm aware of...

Having had a fair few auto's in the past John ...I know they can
be somewhat lacking in a variety of areas ;-)
That said IS the disgay box shifter on bowden cables OR mounted
to the top of the box ???
