Overdrive advice.

I'm looking to buy an overdrive as the 1st major upgrade to my
88" Travelling up and down the A55 can be tiresome and noisy
with the 2.25 Diesel screaming away ::) I'm not concerned at
that but would like an O/D.
I am watching a couple on eBay, they look good to me but any
advice would be appreciated because I have heard stories of
whiney/noisy O/D's.... It's a big outlay too and don't want end
up with 'a lemon' :-\

If you get a good one, they are great, but, unless you can hear
one in a vehicle, you will never know how good the one you buy
is - which is pretty unfortunate.
The only way to buy a good one is either with a great deal of
good luck, or buy one from someone who will let you test it in a
motor.
Edit to add - I overtook a 'tragic' (covered in 'one life etc'
style stickers) D3 on the A55 last year in my series one!

The second link is tempting because it is a trader, feedback is
good and it says it is 'tested'. 1st link does not accept
returns...

Tested and ....
Be careful with wording like that. I would strongly a suggest
buying one you can test otherwise its a complete guess. The
obvious problems can be seen with the clutch sleeve, but the
bigger problems lie inside, and cannot be seen without full
dismantling

^^^ I agree a test drive may save a lot of whining etc.
Mark, don't all your Solihull veeehicles have at least one of
those stickers?

That's just the standard wording eBay adds if the seller hasn't
filled in all the boxes detailing a returns policy. It doesn't
mean you're stuck with an item if it turns out to be a duffer.

Wow. The power of inflation.
When I had my first Landrover, in the early 1980's I bought a
new Fairy overdirve and fitted it myself. I'll swear it wasn't
much over £100 new then.
Now they are going for over £500 second hand.
That sort of inflation has only been beaten in that time by
house prices.

£530 plus P&P. Not worth it. You'll get one cheaper than that.
Agree with above though. Test it on a running vehicle or insist
on a return if it turns out to be a pig. Can you still get hold
of the Rocky Mountain or Toro overdrives. They're both supposed
to be better than the Fairey (ie. stronger) aren't they?
