       Halogen headlight conversion
By: Gadget Date: February 7, 2013, 3:04 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Looking at getting a convertion kit for wsl. Would it be wise to
fit a relay into the wiring?
Reason on the thinking being that the wiring is 52yrs old.
If a relay should be fitted where in the wiring?
       Thanks

       Yes to 2 relays.
Put the relays near the battery (on the bulkhead will do) and
then I would wire it like this:

Very handy - thanks Parksy, just about to do the same as Gadget.

Yes to the relay. My series three cooked two dip switches in two
years so now runs through a relay. I think it is the extra load
of halogen conversion and brit part crap switches. No problems
so far since fitting last one and relay.

Im not saying anyone is wrong ... but ... I dont entirely
       understand.
I read a lot about relays for halogen headlights but they all
seemed to revolve around melted switches. I can accept that
replacement switch / stalks are not very well made but as the
       sealed units were 55w / 12v and the halogens are 55w / 12v
surely everything electrickery is the same? Yes, the glass might
get a bit hotter with the light output ... but 55w is 55w is 55w
       ... isnt it?
I dont have relays on mine and havent noticed anything yet - or
have I now jinxed it lol

I just did exactly the same wiring/lighting mod to mine too, and
took the opportunity to put a new "blade type" fuse box on a
bracket on top of my underseat battery. Also have my heated
screen and glowplugs off the same fuse box.
Amazing difference, for not more than £35 in total
And takes the high currents away from fragile old
       wiring/fusebox.

Can anyone tell me if I were to wire mine up the same am I
correct in thinking that the relay feeding the high beam can
also feed my spotlights or will they require a third relay?

Personally I would use a 3rd, but you could take a wire off
after the relay to the spots as well yes.
If you use a 3rd they are in their own circuit with their own
feed and therefore wont fail if the mainbeam circuit does.
They should have their own switch in the circuit as well.
