dashboard splits

My dash has started to split. At first it was nothing to worry
about, but now its getting bigger. Has anyone got any tips on
how to repair or just stem the split from splitting. Thanks

The way to stop splits in most materials is to drill a hole at
each end of the existing split, has worked for me in the past on
both a fiberglass body and once when working on an engine block
just before welding it... :thumbs:

Depends on how big the split is and if you can live with it as
to how you proceed. The vinyl on landy dash boards becomes
brittle with age, and cracking is inevitable sooner or later. To
repair properly, get yourself some vinyl (buy it from auto
trimmers or, even cheaper, from ebay. buy it by the metre). Take
all the metal clips off the underside of dash and keep for
re-use. Take a heat gun, or hairdryer to the vinyl starting at
an edge, and slowly peel off the old. If the foam has been
damaged (chewed by dog etc), fill damaged area with expanding
foam. Cut and sand to profile when set (easy, only takes couple
mins). Then apply auto trimmers spray glue, or brush on glue if
you arent as messy as me! Next, lay the new vinyl covering over
the glue, with a damp cloth, push out any air bubbles. Leave
overnight to fully set. I normally lay a plank of wood on mine
then clamp the lot, but it isnt really necessary. When glue has
set, replace all those fiddly metal clips, pulling any slack out
of the new vinyl. Cut slots for your windscreen heater vents,
and job done. It is much simpler than I have described ! I have
done loads, used same process for dash bottoms too. Good luck,

I get my adhesive from a place in Nottingham called Wayside
Adhesives. Their glue is excellent. They also do butyl stuff for
windscreens and sound deadening pads, etc etc. All excellent
stuff and inexspensive too. No conection to the company, just
satisfied customer passing on top info :smilewide:

If I'd have been keeping the S3, I would have stripped it and
replaced with vinyl as well, but it was a rat anyway, so a bit
of duct tape didn't look out of place :rolleye0012:

Australian sun really eats the vinyl dash tops. I have just left
mine and call it "patina" :smilewide:
