It's not in gear is it ? I done a head gasket on my ford and put
the head back on and went to turn the engine over by hand and it
wouldn't budge so I took the head back off to check everything
was ok which it was,put the head back on again and it still
wouldn't turn over I'd only left the feckin thing in gear
.......what a :wanker:

Right OK, not too sure about main bearing caps but I'm pretty
sure that they all went on the right way around. Oh and it's
not in gear, made sure of that.
Little bit more done with a bit of after thought, I've now
removed the rocker assembly to see if the valves were part of
the problem, theory being less resistance = easier to turn over.
Guess what? still can't turn over :-?
Now I can pretty much guarantee that I've turned this over
before however to set the timing / tappet clearances etc however
I've not fired it up.
Next thoughts are:
Chuck some oil in the bores and hopefully it will seep through,
I've had enough for the weekend and wont get anything done
before next weekend.
Next weekend:
See if it turns over by hand, if not:
Remove cylinder head, and try again then if that doesn't work:
Remove gearbox and see if the clutch is part of the problem?

Stuey, did the original flywheel go back on? I only ask as I got
it wrong a few months ago on a petrol and the ring gear was
different and it jammed with the starter causing it to appear
that the engine was seized... Removed the started and realised
my problem.

Simon, yes it did however you have given me an idea to think
about, remove the starter and see if it turns over by hand :-?

A mechanic once told me that they sometimes had to tow start
cars with rebuilt engines as they were so tight at first.

Stuey, ......remove the starter, pull the 'plunger' out of the
starter and try to turn that first, thats if the 'plunger' isn't
already stuck out and stuck fast.
You must have already truned the engine over to set the tappet
clearences??
IMHO! ;D

Nuggs, yes have turned it over before by hand to set the tappet
clearances but that was a while ago now!
Gadget suggested something last night, and that was to actually
fit a socket on the starter dog and turn it a few times with a
socket on it, should be able to get a bit more purchase.
To clarify what I've done before I left for the week:
Removed tappets / rocker assembly.
Removed heater plugs.
Still no turn over.
Drizzled some oil over the cylinder head and squirted some into
each cylinder, the theory being that over the week it will soak
through just in case something is stuck and all that since
rebuild.
Next weekend:
Remove starter (starter works Nuggs tried it on a battery off
the motor)
Try and turn over with big socket on starter dog
Hopefully that will work and free it off a bit :-?
Starter motor back in, remove push rods try and turn over on a
battery and see how we get on with that.
Hopefully that will work and can put back together and start
again :smilewide:

Stuey,
Hope you have a more succesful weekend trying to get the engine
turning over ; but without throwing eggs at a granny.........
and I know; you know what you're doing when it comes to engines
'n that but as an analogy, an iffy hoover seems to work just
fine until you cover the end up......... and give it some
loading ( and you should know - bitch)
[i put the last bit in as a pre-empted strike to the retort I'll
likely get] ;D
