I'd be interested to know what HM taxpayer got when it was sold
off in the first place. They sold off Cultybraggan Camp up here
- huge place that used to be a POW camp in WW2, loads of nissen
huts and an almost new cookhouse - for £300k, or the price of a
largish local house. It had a huge bunker next to it that would
have been a refuge for Govt had WW3 kicked off. BBC studios, the
lot. I think that was sold seperately.
Defence Infrastructure Organisation do not have a good
reputation for getting value for money for the taxpayer when
they dispose of sites.

According to the papers, this base was decommissioned in 2006
and sold by the MOD to firm called Stylespace for £4,000,000.
'Agent Nick Barlow, from Midlands-based Barlow Associates, said:
“The owner thought that the underground bunker would work for
him as a data centre but to cut a long story short it didn’t
work for him.'
There must be a tax reason for taking a £1.5 m loss.
I did think of buying it myself, subject to yesterdays lotto
roll-over results, but apparently the RAF are retaining a
presence on the site and there is also a radar museum which is
not included in the sale, so overall it lacks the privacy I
need for my other hobby. :rolleye0012:

I nearly bought a Clansman 353 vehicle mounted HF set from a
bloke last year (Dealer of walt gear advertising on fleabay) New
tagged with price by the military ...as per Military legislation
...
Cost to the Military £150,000
Cost to me £60 earth pounds ...(And his garage was stacked floor
to ceiling with them)
You can sort of see where the money goes BUT bear in mind when
Marconi/Plessey etc tender and win the contract for making
them,A lot of the time they are bound NOT to sell them to anyone
else SO a lot of development costs etc involved with a limited
market.
All that said there must be hangers all over the place on bases
stuffed from floor to rafter with redundant stuff waiting for
disposal for peanuts .

Hopefully one of them is full of 6.50 Xtra Grips..... I do
wonder sometimes, when i see stuff going through Withams thats
been obsolete for years just who was hanging onto it and why -
those civil defence Austin Gypsies last year fr'instance. Other
stuff just plain amazes me - humungus bits of brand new plant
equipment that must have cost squillions. Why not just stick in
a shed "just in case" instead of selling it for 2/10th of FA.
.... a bloke at work tried to explain that it was better to flog
off stuff like the Dafs for £2k because if they were left any
longer they'd be scrap and then MOD would have to pay some-one
to take them away and dispose of them all ecologically.... I
refrained from saying Bollix 'cos he outranks me...
