Burred nuts to rear prop shaft fixing to transmission brake.

Hi
I am in the middle of changing the layshaft bearings to my
series 3 swb. I have encountered a problem which I really
appreciate any help with. I can't seem to loosen the 4 nuts
fixing the rear prop shaft to the transmission brake. It seems
that a some time someone has had a go at removing the rear prop
as three of the four nuts have rounded / burred and consequently
I can't seem to get them undone. The thread or stud projects
over the head of the nut so I am unable to weld a nut to them to
be able to loosen.
This has resulted in me removing the gearbox with the rear prop
still attached - however I am now stuck as I am unable to remove
the transfer box whilts the rear prop remains in-situ.
Anyone have any ideas or experience in dealing with this.... I
would be very very very appreciative. Photos below:

We turned the attachment function off mate ...
Upload to photobucket and then the [IMG] tag copy and paste
thang ...
Regarding the mullered nuts ...my usual remedy is to find a
socket of decent kwality (Or ideally someone else's) that will
almost fit on the burred nuts ...then hammer it on to a tight
fit ,then wrench as per usual .
Brutal and none elegant BUT it's got me out of the doodahh a
good few times :smilewide:

Hi, they can be buggers! Usually it's because someone has tried
to undo them with a metric spanner instead of a 9/16. Do you
have one of those proper prop shaft sockets with the long narrow
shaft? As I have found they are very effective, even on rounded
nuts, especially with a gentle tapping to get them right to the
base of the nut where there is usually some intact hexagon left.

Hi
thanks for both replies - have tried the with a deep 9/16 ring
spanner and 9/16 deep socket but still no joy. The problem
being that they are lower than the outer prop plate profile and
so I can't even cut them off.... really annoying. thought of
welding a large nut sat over the outside of the original 9/16
nut and then removing with the large nut but might just go for
Iceman's solution.

Also, a six sided 9/16 socket will be better than a twelve sided
majobby.

You should be able to slide the drum off over the propshaft, and
you can then get behind the 4 nuts. You can at least get to the
back to cut them off then

I use a 6 point Snap-On spanner and matching socket for my prop
fittings. They are far better than the 12 point. I bought
expensive stuff, sure, but it has lasted.

think i could get a cutting disk behind but I will check again -
