Tractors

I have decided that I need a little tractor for general duties
round my place but I know very little about them, apart from a
brief stint driving forestry ones and then a little time using
compact tractors for grounds maintenance.
Main things are it must have a loader and be able to move one,
and preferably two Heston bales; able to run a 6ft topper as i
can borrow one of them from the next door farmer
Can anyone offer any sensible advice about makes or models to
look at/avoid used.

I would bee looking at either a Ferguson T25 or a David Brown
990 the Cropmaster won't do all that you want.
The T25 and the 990 used to be quite cheap, but prices for
decent ones are on the rise.

I think a Fergie would be on its knees handling big bales like
that, they aren't really built for it.
Something 1970 onward is your best bet, anything really cheap
will be shagged but look at Leylands, Internationals even
Zetors. Fords Deeres MFs are daft money now but it's worth
picking up one of the many tractor mags and looking through the
classifieds.

You would be looking for a ford 4600 5000 onwards.
Anything blue you will be fine with but leave tractors with
electronic gubbins alone when they are over 15 years old.
Nothing but trouble in my experience.
I have a Ford 4600 4x4 quite rare apparently and quite
collectible. Fordson Majors are quite able across the board but
old and quite clumbersome. You also want a tactor with modern
spool vales as you can then use more machinery.

Thanks all, much as I like the Fergies I did think that moving a
Heston around might be asking a bit much of it so began looking
at slightly bigger ones (most of the ones round here are too big
for what I want, all the little ones seem to live in the barns
as scrapers)
It isn't an imminent purchase but want to start looking now and
getting some idea of what I should be looking for

up to around £5000 is what I have been thinking about, I am
aiming for something that can be used, not to worried about
cosmetics.

You will be able to get a decent tractor for that, and if you
don't mind traveling a little other wise you may need to
organise a haulier if its far away.

With 5K to play with I would be talking to local auction houses
regarding farm sales. I have seen some good deals on farely
recent tackle at farm sales.
