SERIES 3 WINDCREEN WIPERS NOT WORKING
   DIR By: RedLandyAndy
       Date: January 22, 2013, 2:06 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Enroute to work this morning the drivers' wipers gradually lost
movement (the passengers' side is ok). It moves about 3 inches
in a sporadic fashion. When lifted off the windcreen the wiper
rotates the full 'arch'. Any tips as I drove back in the rain
without it working! MOT on Saturday and it's Sod's Law that it's
not working properly. Any tips gratefully recieved!

Sounds like either A. the wiper gear wheel has stripped OR B.
the drive cable has stripped .
IF its option B. it is possible to take the cover off the wiper
motor gearbox and disconnect the cable and withdraw it from the
motor end (Remove both wiper arms first so the spindles can
rotate as you withdraw it ) And it saves stripping the whole lot
       apart .
Same applies IF it is the wiper gear wheel thats stripped (It is
sometimes possible to rotate the gear 180 degrees to engage the
undamaged bit of the gear wheel though )

Had this problem myself. assuming the motor is working its
either the cable or (most likely) the gear wheel assembly, which
I had to change and is a pain to do, as you need to dismantle
the speedo and switch dash panel and its associated wiring etc,
plus the heater tubes and flaps to get at it.
BUT, this originally started ages ago and I worked out a fix
which gave me three years grace. Own risk etc, as it could fook
the whole thing up completely. Remove the wiper arm and attach a
set of mole grips to the spindle. Rotate the spindle through 180
degrees. You'll get some crunching and you'll feel teeth
jumping across the cable, but the theory is the gear wheel only
wears through however many degrees the arc moves. by forcing the
wheel round you engage unworn teeth and the thing starts to work
again without having to dismantle the dashboard. Like I say, own
risk for a quick fix, but it gave me 3 MOT's before the whole
thing packed in completely and had tp be replaced. Good luck.
       ICEY BEAT ME TO IT!

I found it best (providing it's as above the drivers side one)
to withdraw the cable allowing the spindle to rotate at will
...THEN as you feed the (new/or undamaged original) back in when
it gets as far as the drivers side (you will feel the cable try
to rotate the drivers side spindle) keep rotating the wiper
spindle back and forwards until it feels loose as in the bit
with no teeth on it are trying to mesh the drive cable ...then
just catch it as you push the last bit of cable in .
AND check that the wiper describes the full arc of the screen as
the cable moves back and forth .
Epically fiddly BUT less fiddly than ragging the whole lot apart

Is your wiper arm tight on the little spindle...the grub screw
on mine wore down so it felt tight but the arm was slipping on
       the shaft....nothing major...

Thanks Chaps; I will try the grub screw tip first and then work
       my way up from there.

This weather the grease in the tubes and on the rack will be
'stiff'(it will probably be dry with age anyway) which, while
not the main cause of your problem, will not be helping matters.
If you do progress to the point where it is partially or all
apart take the opportunity to clean and regrease.

I've had the wheel boxes seize up on me before on the 101, they
aren't expensive to replace but with nothing to loose I managed
to strip them down and refurb them in to good working order.
The gear is push fitted onto the shaft and the shaft comes out
the front (oposite to the gear) side after walloping with a bfh
and a drift. a quick clean and run over with some emery cloth,
some grease and reassemble. work a treat.

Thanks tp all who gave me advice; much appreciated. Problem now
sorted. The spindle was worn. I bought a replacement from
Brookwells this morning. The new spindle had to be drilled out a
fracton to fit snugly. Next stop MOT......
