Chains

Not wanting to hijack heightswitch's thread
Which set of wheels am I best fitting snow chains to? I have
been trundling about with them on the front figuring that brakes
& steering & most of the weight is carried with those wheels,
Also I then have control as to when i put traction through them
by selecting 4wd, All has seemed well from my short experience,
but is it the correct thing to do?
I did briefly think about putting them on the back because
these are the permanent drive wheels, however this thought then
got deleted on the basis that if I am on ground that's grippy
enough to be in 2wd then I should be taking the chains off
anyway.

well after slewing around on the rangemasters with the diff lock
engaged I would assume that chains on the rear would be best but
I have never used them and am prepared to be corrected!!

On the rear.
Same reason as you put your best tyres on the rear - understeer
is more controllable (for most non-professional drivers :-\)
than oversteer.
What you don't want is the back end trying to overtake you when
you brake :eek:

Hmmm. Depends on what you are using them for maybe ? Not sure
that under/oversteer is much of a problem at the speeds I'd be
using chains at ? I'd be more inclined to think of it in terms
of chains on the front wheels pulling me towards where I'm
steering ( good) , rather than chains on the back pushing the
front wheels in the direction of least resistance (bad) ?
...anyway, I put chains on all four wheels when I do use them,
thats what they told us to do in training for Bosnia ....

On the front. Being able to steer is more important than being
able to go. Max speed with chains should only be about 30 and if
you need them that's probably too quick.

After experiencing chains for the first time this last weekend
and being well impressed with the performance then the front is
definitely the place to have them.

Can recommend pewag, have a fast fit hoop and have not let me
down yet.

Currently looking at pewag austro super. The others have the
tensioning mechanism like mine had which is a bit weak.
